Move emails from apple mail to windows outlook (or the reverse)

Hello Everyone,

I have recently bought a windows laptop as majority companions in my office have windows only. I also have mac book pro having apple mail as my e-mail client. I work in a small company in which e-mail is the life blood of our company. So now what I need to do is move all my emails from apple mail to outlook that is present in windows laptop. I haven't found any answers or discussions regarding this topic on this forum site. Can any one please help me get over with this problem or at least guide me or direct me to the forum where solution for this query is posted.

I have also read about third party tools are available for this kind of transfer, but i couldn't find one that solves my problem.

Your help will be really appreciated. Thank you.

Is your mail stored on an IMAP server? If so, this becomes trivial, you can connect to the IMAP server from several computers running different mail programs, and each one has a full copy of your mail.

Well i know that very well, but i need some solutions not more complications. It would be really helpful if you could provide me some solutions. Thank you.

I have tried solving my issue with Gmail IMAp account but i have 4000 plus mails in 45 folders. Using IMAP i can transfer only one file at a time, that will take me days to transfer that amount of files.

Are there any other options available...???

Outlook 2011 does not import from Apple Mail

I am trying to import from Apple Mail (OSX Lion) to Outlook 2011.
I choose Apple Mail from the Outlook import menu (all items are checked --- accounts, mail, contacts etc) but all I get imported into Outlook is an empty "Mail Import" File.

Your help will be really appreciated. Thank you.

If your mail is already stored on an IMAP server, then you don't need to transfer anything at all. So I repeat the question, is your mail stored on an IMAP server? Or to ask the same question another way, if you look in Mail.app > Preferences > Accounts, and look at your mail accounts, do they say "POP" or "IMAP" under the account name?

Apple Mail stores messages in .mbox files, which is a well-defined standard. Outlook, of course, is not very standards friendly. But if you search the net for "mbox to outlook" you will find plenty of utilities that claim to do the conversion for you.

You did not mention what mail provider your using. If its an IMAP provider like Gmail or Exchange you really do not need to anything. All the mail is on the server and will come back on its own.

anthlover 04-23-2013 10:34 PM

As Trevor said if mail is IMAP or Exchange you do not really need to do anything. Mail is stored on server and will re-download automatically.

You can prove this to yourself easily before switching. Use the Appropriate Web Client. Outlook web or Gmail web etc. All the mail should be there.

Lastly you really did not explain but Apple Mail supports virtually all mail standards so no real reason to switch, but you already did so moot.

Well, no. Apple Mail stores each apparent mailbox in a folder with a .mbox extension. (The standard .mbox format stores all the messages of a mailbox in a single file.)

Inside that folder are many levels of nested subfolders, organized so that over over periods of time measured in not too many hours, only a few subfolders are expected to change, making it easier for Time Machine to home in on the changes. Eventually, you get down to files with a .emlx extension, one per mail message.

A .emlx file contains a single mail message, in the format:
  • One line containing a decimal number.
  • That many bytes, containing a single message in RFC 822 format.
  • A property list in XML format, containing whatever properties Mail wants to associate with that message.
A .mbox file contains a sequence of individual mail messages, each consisting of:
  • A "separator" line, beginning with the 5 exact characters "From ", followed by whatever properties (typically only sender and date received) the mail agent wants to associate with the message.
  • A message in RFC 822 format, except that any line beginning with "From " will have a leading space prepended.
  • Optionally, a blank line.

The only similarities between .mbox and .emlx formats are that they're both textual, and both include somewhere within the actual message(s) in more-or-less RFC 822 format.

In both cases, the mail agent is free to have external databases to facilitate rapid access to the messages and/or contain additional properties not included in the file.

Apple Mail did, once upon a time, use standard .mbox files, but those aren't Spotlight-friendly, so Mail switched to using folders of .emlx files along with the introduction of Spotlight on 10.4 Tiger. They should have started nesting the subfolders with the introduction of Time Machine on 10.5 Leopard, but didn't get around to it until 10.7 Lion.

I'm guessing you investigated the inner workings of Mail early on, some time before Tiger, and had no occasion to notice that the file formats have changed since then.

Outlook emails move to apple mail

Is there any way to transfer the emails from outlook 2007 to apple mail.

I am a mac-new-bee :)and don't know anything technical about mac. i want to transfer all my emails from outlook 2007 (windows 7, office 2007) to apple mail (mac book pro, OS X Mountain lion 10.8.1). Only thing I know is outlook stores its files in .pst format and apple mail in .mbox. So how do i move these pst files to apple mail containing mbox files.

Apple mail email Import

Hello Everybody,

Need some effective solution to transfer emails from Ms Outlook 2011 to Apple mail. The import option in apple mail doesn't show outlook 2011. I know this topic is a common one but for my satisfaction i need my research to be done accurately so that there are no hassles to solve my issue quickly.

I hope to get good response from this website as i have found many good solutions to my problems without even logging in.

Thanks for support.

I did this (a few years ago) when I left a government department and wanted to keep a track of all my transactions. Mind, I was transferring from a government PC laptop. I used a neat piece of software that I downloaded for £notmuch. A bit like this I think: http://movemymailtomac.com

If you're transferring from MS Outlook on a Mac to Mail on a Mac then I think the best option is to make sure it's an IMAP account. A well phrased Google search should do the trick for you.

Good luck.

There are some other forums discussing about the same situation;

I hope this helps you.

Here's a few methods.

Looks like the software Emailchemy is the preferred one (it works!) and still only about $30

I haven't found any solution to my query yet....????

DeltaMac 05-12-2013 07:11 AM

It would help if you can give the versions of both Mail (on your Mac), and Outlook (on your PC laptop)
And, it would also help if you can tell us what you have already tried (so we don't waste your time by suggesting methods that you have already tried.)

There is a lot of methods to do what you want if you Google for that.
Here's one example: http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/exp...ook-viceversa/
A good app mentioned by others is Emailchemy: http://www.weirdkid.com/products/emailchemy/

anthlover 05-12-2013 10:36 AM

Email alchemy is the only good solution that I am aware of too:)
