Palm 4.1 Survived Panther Install Fine

Pam 4.1 Survived Panther Install Fine. *** I ran Upgrade.

Please Note that Archive and Install Kills Hot Sync and Conduits in Jag and then you have to reinstall...

Also Please note I have had nasty nasty Problems with Mark Space Missing Link in Jag and well never ever use there unecessary software again.

I mention because it creates that Nasty Install/Uninstall problem mentioned elsewhere. And then the Only Fix is to hunt down all Palm Bits and Pieces before running install, preferable after saving user data.

spygrad2003 10-31-2003 11:43 AM

I reinstalled missing sync with panther, and it works better than it ever did before. I've had no problems with it at all. Palm desktop won't install at all, but missing sync works great. Don't know what could have happened with yous.

Formz, you might want to start a new thread with that problem, as this thread (should be) is mainly for 3rd party app that worked under Jaguar and are broken under Panther.

Re: palm problems too

I've had occasional problems with Palm Desktop as well, but have been able to resolve them lately by moving dropped conduits from /Library/Application Support/PalmHotSync/Disabled Conduits to the /Library/Application Support/PalmHotSync/Conduits folder. That didn't work at first, but does OK since reinstalling Palm Desktop.

Window shade v3.0.1 is made to be compatible with 10.2 and 10.3 , but I just read a post at the x11-users lists, that it breaks X11:

"Unsanity Window Shade v3 and v3.0.1 breaks X11 - you're unable to minimise (or Windowshade/MIP) any windows".

Netzero Update

I just received an update from Netzero saying they now have a Panther compatable version available. I am at work so I can't check it out, but will do so this evening. Anyway, I'm probably the only person on here using Netzero.

Corel Photo Paint 11

Corel Photo Paint 11 as part of my Graphics Suite 11 does not start any more. It quits after showing the info-window during startup. The system doesn't even pop up an error message. All other applications of the graphics suite work well.
Has anybody else experienced this problem? Probably I am the only Mac user having CorelDraw installed on his computer (shame on me :D )...
Installation of GS-Servicepack 1 did not help...

Default Folder X, Extensis Suitcase, Dock Extender

I installed Panther with my main user account active. Stupidly, I failed to remove Default Folder X, Extensis Suitcase and Dock Extender as background/log-in applications before I started.

After the final restart I logged in OK, but when the Finder came up it was flashing on and off once a second and every single app lasted about half a second before it crashed.

I restarted as another user who didn't have those three utilities set up and there were no problems. After a couple of phone calls to Apple they couldn't find any way to rescue my main user account and I had to create a new one, save my old Home Folder (this is all automated in the Accounts section of Sys Prefs - but you have to be VERY careful to press the right buttons or you could lose everything). Then I had to copy everything back from a huge disk image of my old folder. I also had to re-enter a hell of a lot of settings and serial numbers.

Not knowing which of three utilities was to blame, I tried installing Dock Extender again. Everything appeared to go OK until I tried to apply my new menus to the dock, at which point the dock disappeared and wouldn't come back. Restarting didn't help, so I uninstalled Dock Extender and manually deleted all the related files I could find from my Library folder. Another restart brought the dock back.

I suspect Extensis suitcase may be blameless and it was Default Folder X that caused the big trouble, but I'm going to try managing fonts with Fontbook for a while before I try Suitcase again.

From the Default Folder folks:
Quote:

WARNING: Versions of Default Folder X prior to 1.9 are incompatible with Mac OS X Panther. Do not install Panther without first upgrading to Default Folder X 1.9. If you have installed Panther and all applications are quitting as soon as you launch them, log in while holding down the Shift key. After doing so, disable Default Folder X in System Preferences or download and install Default Folder X 1.9.2b1 immediately.
I'm surprised the Apple folks didn't have you try to log in with the Shift key down to avoid Startup Item conflicts!

RE: Corel 11

Just read this on MacFixit:

"Corel PhotoPaint: Some users have reported problems starting up Corel PhotoPaint and some other Corel applications after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3. In some cases, this issue can be resolved by holding down the "Shift" key during application launch. You will then be presented with a dialog box that asks:

"Overwrite the current workspace with the factory default?"

Clicking yes will result in loss of any custom workspaces, but has resolved the issue for some readers."

I personally haven't taken the plunge Panther wise, so can't validate the above solution, but it might prove useful for those that have.

Re: Corel11

@robarmo: Thank you for that hint! It worked and PhotoPaint starts up again - so now everything works well except for my Microtek ScanSuite software. But there is said to be a hint for that on the Microtek support site...

As you, I did an erase-and-clean install. But the version of Toast I installed was from the 5.2.1 updater. I then ran Repair Permissions before launching Toast. No problem using Toast on my 733-mhz G4 with 10.3.1 or 10.3 earler.

Respectfully, Norm

Safari minimum font size

With Panther came the latest Safari 1.1 which no longer lets you set a minimum font size! On a 1280x1024 display with my old eyes the fonts are too small. Every new page requires an "apple+" keystroke twice. This hint is broken:"Set a minimum font size in Safari"

Editing the .plist or using the latest Safari Enhancer doesn't work any more.

Maybe it will become a preference in Safari 1.2?

Vue d'Esprit 4

After an Archive and Install upgrade to Panther, attempting to minimize an open window of Vue 4.2 (there was a required upgrade to run on Panther) caused the tool bars and 'outline of the window' to move to the dock but the actual image portion of the windows remained behind on the screen. The process would not expand from the dock again. Using WindowShade would do similar except the windowshade effect would not roll back down. The only way out was quitting the program, but you could save your work so it wasn't a total disaster.

I presumed there was a software conflict and tried eliminating startup items to no avail nor did trashing prefs accomplish anything. Booting into my diagnostic user account which has absolutely no third party system enhancements didn't solve the issue.

Successful resolution of the issue came only with downloading the new Panther compatible installer, trashing all the old Vue files, inserting my original Vue 4 install CD and running the new installer which used all the needed files off the CD. As a result, I have to conclude that Vue installed some file or files in the Previous System Folder which I didn't find (or were incompatible) after the Panther install.
