Applications "broken" by Mac OS X 10.3

Please list those you've found to either not work or not run as well as in 10.2.x

Avid Xpress DV 3.5.

I have not verified this...I do not have Panther. :)

Word on the Avid forums is that Avid Xpress DV v3.5.4 will not work on OS X.3. It is unlikely to be patched, as Avid Xpress Pro (the successor to Xpress DV) has been released, and rumor has it that Xpress Pro works fine on X.3.

wayneyoung 10-24-2003 07:35 PM

Netzero software does not work.

edit at Yellow's request:
Doesn't work and no Panther update.

yellow 10-24-2003 07:50 PM

Clarification please..

Err.. don't work and have no Panther update, or don't work without looking for an update?

mervTormel 10-24-2003 08:52 PM

beware

PTH{clock, pasteboard, itunesNotifier} are not entirely working well. grep'ing for updates has proved fruitless.

iChatStatus.prefPane
MenuMeters.prefPane

have been misbehaving.

clutter got its head wedged between the iron bars, but a little elbow grease got past its ears.

some may see anomalies with some apps that aren't really broken, just winged.

post those here, too, so we can monitor.

petey 10-24-2003 09:53 PM

anyone try QuicKeys on Panther?

i know it's at least slightly broken, but i'd like to find out how broken it really is.

i'm addicted to QK.

Fetchart script for iTunes not working.

Datebook Conduit for Palm Desktop got totally bumped. I tried copying it from my backup and it wouldn't work. I then tried reinstalling Palm Desktop and it wouldn't install--some error message about the system. I rebooted in my 10.2.8 backup on a firewire drive and reinstalled Palm Desktop on Panther; when I rebooted, everything worked fine.

It could be that the new iSync conduit for Palm had something to do with this problem.

There was a report on the front page of MacFixIt that Palm Desktop 4.1 was broken by Panther. It seems that the work around is to copy the HotSync files from Jaguar. Apparently reinstalling from Jaguar also works. Good find!

Phil St. Romain 10-25-2003 11:26 AM

Copying the HotSync files didn't work for me, yellow.

I read the MFI report later and noted, too, that some people had no trouble at all. It seems the problem is widespread enough that Palm is looking into it.

fxt 10-25-2003 11:37 AM

copypaste-x 1.6 seems broken. when its activated i cannot type the lowercase letter "c". 100% repeatable on my rig. anyone else see this?

rbrowser 3.2.1 cannot make ssh connections, but the developed will send you version 3.3 , which does work.

and, as already well documented, psync isn't working.

Weird, I just installed Panther at work and HotSync'd just fine. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

i tired to use diskwarrior 3 in 10.3 on a internal ata disk in my g4. i got this weird message saying it wasn't able to replace the directory because of a mac os resource problem and the replace button was greyed out. i had to force quit dw and the drive was unmounted, when i tried to mount it with disk utility i got a kernal panic.

also my pure-ftpd server is broken in 10.3. i followed these instructions http://forums.macosxhints.com/showt...ghlight=proftpd for installing a pure-ftpd server in 10.3 and it's not working anymore. i get:

Connected to bustthis.homeftp.net.
220-FTP server ready.
220 This is a private system - No anonymous login
331 User charlesx OK. Password required
Password:
530 Authentication failed, sorry
ftp: Login failed.

my password is correct, does this not work in 10.3. it worked great in 10.2.8! did i mess things up by installing this in 10.3?

please help!

jiclark 10-25-2003 03:05 PM

'partially' broken, definitely wonky...

iKey 1.0.4 -supposedly has Panther support, but I get odd problems when trying to use it's Menu shortcuts.

PTH apps -Clock and Pasteboard specifically; as merv mentions above, they work, but can no longer access their prefs (or any of their menus at all, for that matter) in Panther.

MaxMenus -works, but funky; the 'unused menubar area' menu no longer functions, except (rarely) when you click on something in a pop-up menu that happens to overlap the menubar. Other menus work, but don't have icons and such... Proteron developers seem to have disappeared though; their site hasn't been updated in some time, and the 'lead developer' of MM, Ammon Skidmore, gets email bounced from his account. Bummer, as I rely on MM a LOT!

Spell Catcher X -works, but causes odd dialogs to appear on logout/login... Developer is frantically working on a fix, according to his website.

Just some of what I've discovered....

robJ 10-25-2003 03:12 PM

It might be helpful if, when stating that something is broken, you include your method of upgrade to Panther. Some broken things might work fine if they are reinstalled after a Panther upgrade that was done on top of an existing OS X installation.

jiclark 10-25-2003 03:16 PM

install method...

Okay,

I used Archive and Install. I'm actually tempted to go back and do an Erase and Install. I don't really want to spend several more hours (at least!), but there's a enough weirdness in my system that's it's very tempting.

yellow 10-25-2003 03:23 PM

UT2k3

I find the text colors are all screwy in Unreal Tournament 2k3. They've gone from their default yellowish hue to something akin to purplish-pink. Yuck.

Addendum:
A work around is to reset your color setting to 32-bit (or possibly 16 bit, whatever you're running currently). Your colors will be back to normal. This does not survive a quit and restart of the game, however.

Addendum-addendum: *sigh* Once you start a game it goes back to being screwy.

Now Contact

nowsoftware.com/panther.html seems to verify what I read at MacInTouch, namely, that Now Contact is broken for the near future. Bleh!

yellow 10-25-2003 06:24 PM

Now Contact (and UTD) is working just fine for me. I just hope they FINALLY ship the server packages as daemons.

rusto 10-25-2003 06:39 PM

NowContact/UpToDate

UpToDate works fine for me, attempting to launch Now Contact brings up a dialog box (a Now Contact one, not an OS X one) after the splash saying "No Such Volume Exists".

Wait a minute, I just tried it a third time to make sure I got the dialog verbiage correct and it launched OK! The first attempt at launching it, I tried via the QuickContact menu item. The second time by double clicking the contact file itself. Now it launches successfully either way.

DiskWarrior 3

Please see the "DiskWarrior 3 and 10.3" thread where I've posted a reply to another individual who also experienced failure with this powerful utility working with Panther. I've given detailed information in the other thread on the particular kind of failure and different "strategies" I employed without success. (I was hoping to avoid such problems when I did an erase-and-clean install of Panther, alas.)

Process Viewer has become an app called Activity Monitor. I believe CPU monitor was rolled into it as well.

PithHelmet (Safari ad blocker) requires new patch

The bad news: PithHelmet does not work with 10.3 and Safari 1.1 to block ads.

The good news: the creative author of this lovely added feature for using Safari posted a notice on his website on Oct. 20 that he was going on vacation on Panther's release date but would develop a new patch after his return:

synergy 1.0a broken too

synergy just disappears from my menu bar, usually when my computer goes to sleep. i am also finding that when i wake from sleep, i get the beachball and everything locks up. i did a clean install of 10.3 and i am thinking about going back to 10.2.8 because of all of these problems. my backup program does not work, deja vu either. bummer...

Magic Menu of Stuffit Deluxe 7.0.3 update

I found a fix for Magic Menu of Stuffit Deluxe 7.0.3 not working. I loaded Unsanity's Haxie "Menu Extra Enabler", and it worked! I now have that functionality back.

jiclark 10-27-2003 12:19 AM

Re: Synergy 1.0a; not broke here...

It works fine for me.

It is a bummer that Deja Vu doesn't though; I've read it's because the Unix too psync isn't available for Panther yet. That can't be for long, I'd guess...

Palm Problems

Heya,

I was using Palm Desktop just fine in Panther for a while. Just yesterday it stopped syncing :( I will try copying my HotSync prefs from my Jaguar backup. I hope that works cuz I just got a new Tungsten T3, and now cant install anything on it :(

porkchop_d_clown 10-28-2003 09:52 AM

Palm problems...

What's the failure mode?

I had some problems initially, but they went away when I re-installed the desktop and isync packages.

Oooo.. that reminds me. Look in /Library/Palm Hotsync/Conduits. If you have *both* the "Apple" conduit *and* the "Address", "Datebook" and "ToDo" conduits, hotsync will hang. Delete either "Apple" or the other three to restore the built-in conduits or iSync.

Applescript droplet crashes...

Long time ago I wrote "gimpopen" which runs as a droplet. You drag pictures onto it, and it loads them into the Gimp. Works fine in all releases up thru 10.2.8.

In 10.3, it generates a SIGBUS (!?! Applescript generating a SIGBUS !?! ). Worst part, it generates the SIGBUS *after* gimp has launched, apparently in "end open" statement:
Code:

on open these_items
        check_for_x()
        set posix_files to ""
repeat with i from 1 to the count of these_items
                set this_item to (item i of these_items)
                set posix_files to posix_files & " \"" & (POSIX path of this_item) & "\""
        end repeat
        do shell script ENVIRON & "; gimp-remote-1.2 -n " & posix_files & " >/dev/null 2>&1 &"
end open

Anyone else having trouble with droplets?

bustthis 10-28-2003 01:11 PM

i just received this from alsoft

DiskWarrior v3.0 will rebuild the directory of a disk running Mac OS X
10.3 when started under Mac OS X 10.2.x. The best way to achieve this is
to start the computer from the DiskWarrior CD or another media source
running Mac OS X 10.2.x and run DiskWarrior from there.

DiskWarrior v3.0 will not rebuild the directory of a disk when started
under Mac OS X 10.3.

We hope to release a new version of DiskWarrior in mid November. This
new version of DiskWarrior will run under Mac OS X 10.2.x and later,
including 10.3.

Mail, Sherlock, DVD Player, Address Book no worky

I have 2 machines, a Quicksilver single proc 800Mhz and a Powerbook 12in 2002. On the Quicksilver my mail, address book, sherlock, and others are not working. On the powerbook, DVD Player is not working. I do not know why this is happening, and I am getting different error for each one. I have tried deleting preferences, no help. I am also seeing Panther not hold my network preferences as well. These apps listed just bounce in the dock, and nothing happens (not even an error message- just the console output, which I do not have with me). Of course, my Toast is not working either, but I am using like 5.2 or something. If anyone has any ideas other than a wipe and reload?

(BTW: These are the only applications that I have found that do not work so far, I haven't had a whole lot of time to troubleshoot this)

Thanks,

Have you run Repair Permissions on the drive yet? I've seen that fix similar issues. And all of these apps are Apple apps, so bad permissions could be at play.

Welles Goodrich 10-30-2003 09:23 PM

After an archive and install, I ran into a number of the issues others have already mentioned. PTH Clock acted erratically, particularly the dropdown calendar wouldn't drop. I had the CopyPaste lower case 'c' bug where the c key would not work in any text situation although shift + c would give an upper case character and Command + c would copy. Synergy made the lower case 'a' keystroke inoperable in any text use but Command + a would still select all. (Yellow provided the answer on these forums to that one. He had noticed the problem elsewhere and provided me the solution.) MenuPrefs, a menu extra which allows accessing Pref Panes stopped functioning. Clicking on it did nothing. Finally, I did find the Spell Catcher odd alert windows at Login.

Just a thought.

Palm 4.1 Survived Panther Install Fine

Pam 4.1 Survived Panther Install Fine. *** I ran Upgrade.

Please Note that Archive and Install Kills Hot Sync and Conduits in Jag and then you have to reinstall...

Also Please note I have had nasty nasty Problems with Mark Space Missing Link in Jag and well never ever use there unecessary software again.

I mention because it creates that Nasty Install/Uninstall problem mentioned elsewhere. And then the Only Fix is to hunt down all Palm Bits and Pieces before running install, preferable after saving user data.

I reinstalled missing sync with panther, and it works better than it ever did before. I've had no problems with it at all. Palm desktop won't install at all, but missing sync works great. Don't know what could have happened with yous.

Re: palm problems too

I've had occasional problems with Palm Desktop as well, but have been able to resolve them lately by moving dropped conduits from /Library/Application Support/PalmHotSync/Disabled Conduits to the /Library/Application Support/PalmHotSync/Conduits folder. Window shade v3.0.1 is made to be compatible with 10.2 and 10.3 , but I just read a post at the x11-users lists, that it breaks X11:

"Unsanity Window Shade v3 and v3.0.1 breaks X11 - you're unable to minimise (or Windowshade/MIP) any windows".

I just received an update from Netzero saying they now have a Panther compatable version available. I am at work so I can't check it out, but will do so this evening. Anyway, I'm probably the only person on here using Netzero.

Corel Photo Paint 11

Corel Photo Paint 11 as part of my Graphics Suite 11 does not start any more. It quits after showing the info-window during startup. The system doesn't even pop up an error message. All other applications of the graphics suite work well.
Has anybody else experienced this problem? Probably I am the only Mac user having CorelDraw installed on his computer (shame on me :D )...
Installation of GS-Servicepack 1 did not help...

Default Folder X, Extensis Suitcase, Dock Extender

I installed Panther with my main user account active. Stupidly, I failed to remove Default Folder X, Extensis Suitcase and Dock Extender as background/log-in applications before I started.

After the final restart I logged in OK, but when the Finder came up it was flashing on and off once a second and every single app lasted about half a second before it crashed.

I restarted as another user who didn't have those three utilities set up and there were no problems. After a couple of phone calls to Apple they couldn't find any way to rescue my main user account and I had to create a new one, save my old Home Folder (this is all automated in the Accounts section of Sys Prefs - but you have to be VERY careful to press the right buttons or you could lose everything). Then I had to copy everything back from a huge disk image of my old folder. I also had to re-enter a hell of a lot of settings and serial numbers.

Not knowing which of three utilities was to blame, I tried installing Dock Extender again. Everything appeared to go OK until I tried to apply my new menus to the dock, at which point the dock disappeared and wouldn't come back. Restarting didn't help, so I uninstalled Dock Extender and manually deleted all the related files I could find from my Library folder. Another restart brought the dock back.

I suspect Extensis suitcase may be blameless and it was Default Folder X that caused the big trouble, but I'm going to try managing fonts with Fontbook for a while before I try Suitcase again.

From the Default Folder folks:
Quote:

WARNING: Versions of Default Folder X prior to 1.9 are incompatible with Mac OS X Panther. Do not install Panther without first upgrading to Default Folder X 1.9. If you have installed Panther and all applications are quitting as soon as you launch them, log in while holding down the Shift key. After doing so, disable Default Folder X in System Preferences or download and install Default Folder X 1.9.2b1 immediately.
I'm surprised the Apple folks didn't have you try to log in with the Shift key down to avoid Startup Item conflicts!

RE: Corel 11

Just read this on MacFixit:

"Corel PhotoPaint: Some users have reported problems starting up Corel PhotoPaint and some other Corel applications after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3. In some cases, this issue can be resolved by holding down the "Shift" key during application launch. You will then be presented with a dialog box that asks:

"Overwrite the current workspace with the factory default?"

Clicking yes will result in loss of any custom workspaces, but has resolved the issue for some readers."

I personally haven't taken the plunge Panther wise, so can't validate the above solution, but it might prove useful for those that have.

As you, I did an erase-and-clean install. But the version of Toast I installed was from the 5.2.1 updater. I then ran Repair Permissions before launching Toast. No problem using Toast on my 733-mhz G4 with 10.3.1 or 10.3 earler.

Safari minimum font size

With Panther came the latest Safari 1.1 which no longer lets you set a minimum font size! On a 1280x1024 display with my old eyes the fonts are too small. Every new page requires an "apple+" keystroke twice. This hint is broken:"Set a minimum font size in Safari"

Editing the .plist or using the latest Safari Enhancer doesn't work any more.

Maybe it will become a preference in Safari 1.2?

Vue d'Esprit 4

After an Archive and Install upgrade to Panther, attempting to minimize an open window of Vue 4.2 (there was a required upgrade to run on Panther) caused the tool bars and 'outline of the window' to move to the dock but the actual image portion of the windows remained behind on the screen. The process would not expand from the dock again. Using WindowShade would do similar except the windowshade effect would not roll back down. The only way out was quitting the program, but you could save your work so it wasn't a total disaster.

I presumed there was a software conflict and tried eliminating startup items to no avail nor did trashing prefs accomplish anything. Booting into my diagnostic user account which has absolutely no third party system enhancements didn't solve the issue.

Successful resolution of the issue came only with downloading the new Panther compatible installer, trashing all the old Vue files, inserting my original Vue 4 install CD and running the new installer which used all the needed files off the CD. As a result, I have to conclude that Vue installed some file or files in the Previous System Folder which I didn't find (or were incompatible) after the Panther install.

Also not working on Panther are any versions of the Cisco VPN client prior to 4.0.2. Any prior version has to be removed even before upgrading and the new version isntalled once Panther is up and running.

I know there is a built in VPN, but, as I am on a Windows network :( , The built in Panther one does not work because of the connection type they require.

Excel solved now with 10.3.2 update, don't know what problem was before. Would just crash on loading. On another panther oddity, has anyone noticed the top right hand clock etc flashing on and off like a broken street lamp? seems to flicker oddly with no timing or reason, no matter what applications are running or what you are doing. I'm running a 667 Mhz G4 titanium, one of the early ones I think. I've been told they aren't the most reliable little buggers.

10.3.2 hasn't solved my CD problem though, so I've changed preferences to open CD in finder rather than ask first and I just get a blank CD on my desktop which is what I want. When switched to ask first, I get a message saying can't recognise the volumes, eject or ignore. I dunno, problem solved for now.

Was coming down yesterday, not so angry at little computer today.

Here is an other one that I did not see in this tread.

Agfa scanner software for the Duoscan. :(
This is the link to the download area but as you can see there is only OS 9 and OS X and no mention of 10.3. http://www.agfa.com/digicam_scanner_...anner/duoscan/

The only way to to use the software is to be able to start in 10.2.8 or earlier. I was lucky as I had 10.2.8 on a separate HD.

Yes there are other types of software out there but this was the one with this scanner. Will have to restart in 10.2.8 untill the scanner dies and I get a new one.

Broken AppleScript!

In Panther, /Library/Scripts/Finder Scripts/Trim Folder Names.scpt is kaput!

When one opens it using Script Editor [(2.0, v43), AppleScript 1.93] one can read the following text as part of the "comment" introductory to the compiled script:

-- The following line is disabled due to a Menu Manager bug
--set the source_folder to (choose folder with prompt "Pick the folder containing the folders to rename:")

When I enable that line, the script at least starts about its work by asking me to pick the folder, &c., but still ends up doing nothing.

I use this script more than a lot of others. Does anyone know a workaround for this?

I seem to have the latest version of Developer Tools and XCode Tools, not that I know how to use them, but Apple's site has various touts for "new, improved" AppleScript that prompted me to make sure they were up to date.

Any suggestions?

stetner 04-04-2004 10:39 PM

Well, it says it is disabled due to a bug, so don't expect it to work.
Code:

-- The following line is disabled due to a Menu Manager bug
-- set the source_folder to (choose folder with prompt "Pick the folder containing the folders to rename:")

try
tell application "Finder" to set the source_folder to (folder of the front window) as alias
on error -- no open folder windows
set the source_folder to path to desktop folder as alias
end try

The script should default to the Desktop Folder if it cannot use the 'source_folder'.

But if you pick a folder in the finder, and run the script from the applescript menu it works. Note that you must have the parent folder selected to change a directory...

Sumleilmus 04-05-2004 10:51 AM

My feeble wits

Thanks for the reply. I tried the script under lots of conditions, but always with the target folder(s) selected and in the frontmost finder window, and with the parent folder selected as well.

I checked the script by reactivating the disabled lines because I was unsure whether or when the cited Menu Manager conflict might have been resolved, and didn't know if an OS update that addressed that issue would necessarily reactivate the script.

I've never run the script in any other manner than from the AppleScript menu, and it has never worked (under Panther). So, I don't quite follow your meaning when you say "it works."

When I run it, it asks me for the text to trim, it asks me do I wish the beginning or the end of the name trimmed, and then when I run it it returns an error and does not alter the name of the folder.

Unsure of your meaning, I even tried moving the folder to the desktop folder and running the script. It still returned an error.

?????

Ok, if you have a dir like this:
see Pic1.pdf
and you want to change the 'bb b' and 'cc b' directories, you would select the aaa directory and then fire off the script from the black applescript icon in the menu bar
see Pic2.pdf
Tell it to trim ' b' (space b) from the end and you get this:
see Pic3.pdf

PS. damned if I can get an image (not externally hosted) to show up in a post.... therefore attachments. Rob, or any admin, how about a tutorial?

Yes, that's what I've been trying to do

3 Attachment(s)
The reason I'm asking for help is that it doesn't work on my machine.

Could it be due to the ? character (UNIX really dislikes it)?

Even when I try to trim a gang of sample folders named a 2002, b 2002, &c., it doesn't work. My series shows

1 selected folder in front finder window, with parent selected
2 how I activate the .scpt
3 the dialog box for string entry
4 the result (not shown, as 3 is the max. uploadable, but identical to 1)

Thus, my efforts to overcome and understand.

stetner 04-08-2004 03:24 AM

It appears to me you have the folder 'calvarium & osses > 2002' selected.

If you want that folder to be changed you need to have it's parent folder selected, IE 'wsp2002_n_after' then run the script.

You need to have the folder that contains the files and/or folders you want to change selected.

Sumleilmus 04-08-2004 10:38 AM

Alas

Stetner, I appreciate your efforts to help.

When you tell me that the method you describe works for you on your machine, I believe you.

When I tell you that the method that you describe does not work for me on my machine, do you believe me?

I understand the difference between selecting the parent directory/folder (without selecting the directory/folder itself) and selecting the directory/folder itself. I've tried both methods, many times.

What you describe above is the first unsuccessful method of the many I've tried. Since then, and most recently five minutes ago, I tried it again. It did not work. The names of the folders are unchanged.

I would really like to get this to work, because UNIX finds the ? character so distasteful (thus in the Terminal, the directory names are different).

In short, I have a lot of directories that end in " ? 2002" whose names I would like trim. At this point, I should probably try to figure out how to do it in Terminal.

In Terminal, the folder "calvarium & osses ? 2002" appears as a directory named "calvarium & osses ??? 2002"

I'll hunt up the UNIX commands for renaming directories and try to add the (I forget what it's called) -r to make it recursive.

Thanks for your replies.

Sumleilmus 04-08-2004 10:43 AM

Not just UNIX

Not only UNIX! The character for greater than or equal to, so cheerfully accepted by the GUI side of Panther, Jaguar, Puma, and domestic shorthair, doesn't even appear in my text above. It was changed to ?.

I probably should have put a couple of dabs of html before it to make it look like itself.

OK, I thought it might be that the trim script did not like the ? character, but I just created some folders and trimmed '? xxx' off of the end of them with no problem. (where the '?' above and below is really the greater-than-or-equal sign)
Code:

$ ls zzz
xxx ??? xxx/

$ ls -b zzz
xxx \342\211\245 xxx/

$ find zzz/ -name \*\342\211\245\* -print

$ find zzz/ -name \*\ xxx -print
zzz//xxx ? xxx

So, the greater-than-or-equal sign appears to be the unicode string \342\211\245 but I don't see an easy way to trim it in the terminal, without writing a script to do it.

As an aside, if you create some folders named say:

xxx yyy
www yyy
zzz yyy

(with plain ascii names) and try to trim the ' yyy' off, does that work?
