I'm so sorry!! That was a major typo! I meant to say "you are right, iPhoto, is useless for photo editing". Whoops! I call myself proofreading my posts before I hit "submit" but that was a major error. Sorry about that!

No worries - it did seem like an odd claim to make ;)

I would have to give Extensis Portfolio the nod as well. I have used both Cumulus and Portfolio but always come back to Portfolio....usually for the ease of making cross platform cataloged art discs.

For just managing my digital photos I find nothing wrong with iPhoto. It is easy to use, works seamlessly with my digital camera, is great for sending out low-res version via email and it is free!

I don't do any editing in iPhoto, that is what I have Photoshop for but it is hard to beat it. I wish I had it on the PC....I have tried a ton of programs and none work as well as iPhoto.

Have you tried iView MediaPro? I have to say that I found iPhoto a complete dog in comparison, mainly in terms of its speed - or lack of it. In an attempt to make iPhoto less than slothful I created multiple libraries (which necessitated using iPhoto Library Manager - but then, of course, you can't have multiple libraries open at the same time). Even with relatively small libraries (500-1000 images) iPhoto was still really s l o o o w. Selecting a range of images took an age.

Also, iPhoto's propensity for hiding images within its rather arcane folder structure is a pain. Normally, if I wanted to do any further work on an image it was easier to export the image rather than try and find the original.

iView MediaPro, on the other hand, allows multiple catalogues, images can be placed in a folder structure that suits you, image selection and all other operations are extremely fast ... and so on.

If you haven't tried it, despite its cost, it really is a much better product that iPhoto.

I may have tried it sometime in the past but I only use iPhoto for personal use, which for me works fine. If I was making a living with it I am sure I would find something much better and faster. Iphoto was never meant to be a workhorse for grapic artists and it shows!

I use ACDSee on the PC and it does well but the Mac version was not all that great or that fast. Since I had a back injury a couple of years ago I don't really have the need for much more than personal programs at the time. I will give MediaPro a spin if they have a trial version....it is good to keep up on things even if I don't have a need for them right now.

Thanx:D

Yes, they do - I think you get a 21 day trial. I should add that I don't use it for pro work - graphics for me is a hobby rather than a job, but it makes the whole process a lot more enjoyable. If all you need is an image browser iView might not be worth the cost, but give it a try and see what you think.
