Mail keeps crashing on Lion

New MacBook Pro with 10.7.First opening of mail went fine and a bunch
of emails emptied in from the server (mainly junk??). Since then mail
opens then crashes?? With much fiddling have managed to send and
receive once or twice.Allindications show incoming and outgoing signals
live, and wifi finds hub fine, internet working.
May have been something nasty in the junk.
Read one post that suggests library/mail/envelope to trash but I can't find
a mail folder in library??????

DeltaMac 12-30-2011 08:04 PM

Your Library folder is hidden in Lion.
Get into your Library by holding the Option key, then click on Finder's Go menu, and you'll see your Library folder in the middle of the list of folders.

Thanks for that.Seems like this is a known issue with lion.hey ho seems
like we are still beta testing new mac operating systems

Opens then crashes

... with any app, is often a signal that its preferences file is corrupted, and trashing that—or moving it to the desktop, if you're the nervous type—will allow for a nice clean restart of Mail or whatever.

First writing down any settings you might not remember ...

BTW, most app preferences will be in ~/Library/Preferences ... a few are stored in the main Library.

Thanks.tried trashing said files and a reinstall of lion, clearing all mail from
server etc but still mail just crashes on opening. Many similar threads out there.
Hopefully there will be a fix from apple pronto!

Maybe show us the crash report to get some clues.

Launch the "Console" application (under /Applications/Utilities) and look for relevant error messages. Note that messages are labeled with the date & time so you can use that to locate the part of the log to look at. Copy & paste the relevant messages back here so we can see them.
Be sure to look at system.log as well as the console log (Use the "Logs" button (top-left) to see the various logs available - note that you will probably need to be an "admin" user to see the system.log)

If the log refers to a crash log, press the "Logs" button (top-left) and go into the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter section to find that particular crash log. Copy & paste back here the last portion of that crash log - the part that gives details about the last crash (or preferably attach it as a plain text file, using the "Manage Attachments" button at the bottom when you reply).

Thanks for that.I think these are the the two logs you asked for.

That was the full crash log from Mail.app ? Usually the crash log is much longer and gives more details. Please attach the log as an attachment as explained above.

Excuse my "numptiness"!! Struggling a bit but I think this is it.Hang Report.
Thanks for bearing with me.

hayne 01-02-2012 08:08 PM

I don't get any great clues from that crash log, but the crash seems to be related to AddressBook, so perhaps it might be caused by a corrupted AddressBook database.
You might consider reverting to an AddressBook database from your backup, or maybe manually cleaning up your Address Book by exporting your contacts, then removing them and finally re-importing them.

Mmmmm....I did import my address book from a 10.4 machine and it wasn't
straightforward,so that might be it.Also in general the new powerbook isn't
predicting my email addresses,my name and address etc.
There is a log that labels itself hang when i copy it to desktop to turn into a plain text file which may be of more use to you but it is too large to attach (278mb).In fact the log looks full of email related crashes!
I'll try trashing my address book.........

thanks again

Just to update I have erased the hard drive and reinstalled lion afresh.
Set mail up,opened and new mail received.Tried to reply to one and CRASH!
Address book is empty.Mail was the first app I tried.

attached system log from clean start to first crash.

1) I don't have personal experience with Lion, but I understand that it automatically preserves user accounts when installing. So it's not a true "fresh install".

2) In the system.log you supplied, I see lots of misc error messages that may or may not indicate system problems, and then I see this:
Code:

04/01/2012 19:19:15.448 System Preferences: Database file is missing: /Users/deltastudios/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook-v22.abcddb
And later on there is another message about a different missing Address Book database file.

ONZ 01-05-2012 12:31 PM

Thanks for having a look.Feels like a dead end though.I think
I'm right in saying that I can't remove Mail app,I did try,so
if I'm not importing any addresses and it still hangs mail
just won't work.I read other threads where people are using other email apps
but this seems too much?

hayne 01-05-2012 01:04 PM

Not sure what the "dead end" comment was about.
What I was suggesting is that your system seems to have problems and so maybe a clean install (without preserving user accounts, etc) might be a good idea. You could do this by erasing the disk and then installing Lion. Later, you can bring in your user account by using Migration Assistant with your Time Machine (or other) backup.

dianeross 01-06-2012 08:48 PM

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

Open Mail and enter your account.

Do you still see the issue?

If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.

ONZ 01-07-2012 10:00 AM

Thanks for that.New user same probs.Spent a few hours on the phone to apple
and bt (isp) and it seems that the issue might be that I'm using a POP account and it needs to be an IMAP. I'm an ancient email address which was on a BT business account which does not support IMAP.The only option I was offered was change my email address but that would be most inconvenient!
Not sure I understand this so any advice would be most welcome.

Sorry Hayne, maybe I misunderstood.I thought I did a clean install as you outline.Do you mean my mail user account?
Maybe my latest post will shed some light

many thanks

Here's one potential way to deal with this if you don't want to change your email address. You can get a free Gmail account from Google, then it can be set to grab the email from your existing POP account and it can be set to send email from your POP address. Put simply, you would be using a Gmail IMAP account that grabs all your email from your POP account and your recipients still see and use your longstanding address. It's not hard to set up, but it is a lengthy set of instructions to write, so I'll save myself that time until you decide you'd like to go this route.

Mac mail crashing update
I've posted above regarding mac mail crashing on lion.Thought I'd post my
findings/solutions etc. There seems two be two issues. The first is with POP accounts. If an IMAP account is not possible (as it wasn't for me,apparently)
you can fool mail by setting up an account manually and selecting
IMAP whilst leaving all other settings as they would be for a POP.
The second issue, for me at least, was Addressbook. The error logs kept
mentioning address book and having done a clean reinstall, faking an IMAP account and not importing anything into the address book I am finally able to send and receive mail.

I suspect it is the fact that I am importing my address book as a Vcard
which the latest version of mail/lion doesn't like but I'm guessing really and
would be most grateful if anyone has a solution for this my final niggle!

thanks in advance

ONZ 01-24-2012 07:19 PM

Thanks NaOH,I did look at that route but as I'm up and running now it's seems
unnecessary.I would like to import my old address book into my new one without the issues I've had?
