New DiskWarrior question.

Just bought the latest DW online and the disk is on it's way.

However, an auto-download happened and I have a .dmg in Downloads.

Why? It can't do anything without being bootable, so why do they send me an auto-download?

Thanks for any clues here.

Is the disk image a bootable disk? If so, you can burn your own disk.

Otherwise it's still useful for any disks that aren't the system volume.

GavinBKK 12-12-2011 05:50 AM

Not sure how to tell. It is a .dmg and automatically fired down from their server, as soon as my Visa card authorised.

If it is, which app is best to burn it? Do I just burn the .dmg as is, or open it and CCC it to the blank CD?
Thanks!

Gavin

I personally woudl get a 4GB fast USB flash drive to create a bootable Diskwarrior disk.
How big is DMG file should be around 600MB for bootable version ?
You can restore the DMG to flash drive using disk utility or CCC.

GavinBKK 12-12-2011 07:23 AM

Well, I tried that with DU and tried 2 different USB drives and, in both cases, I git a message that the resource was busy; meaning the USB, I assume?

agentx 12-12-2011 07:25 AM

You have formatted the USB drive for GUID/HFS+ is Disk utility befor etrying to restore your 600mb image ?

GavinBKK 12-12-2011 07:27 AM

Yes, with DU. It got that far, then the Resource Busy dialogue popped up.

benwiggy 12-12-2011 10:28 AM

Is the dmg mounted, or not? I would unmount the image, and then try restoring it to a disk.

GavinBKK 12-12-2011 11:19 PM

Well, I tried it again, ensuring that the DW .dmg was not mounted and the task completed, but when I stuck it in the iMac 24" and rebooted, whilst holding down the Option key, the only boot drive shown was the onboard HDD.

What now?

Just wait for the dvd to arrive?

Thanks!

Gavin

Don't you have any other bootable volume (FW/USB disk, thumb drive, or partition, etc), in your arsenal, on which to copy the DW application?

[cd/dvd booting is way overrated, and slower than Chinese water torture. Also —since the boot media is unwritable —it lacks virtual memory, error logging, and other advantages.]

GavinBKK 12-13-2011 01:52 AM

No. I used to have one, but I formatted it (usb) and can't remember how I made it in the first place now.

As I have Lion, it looks like I am SOOL..

I wonder if you have already received the "disk" in the form of a .dmg file.
The incremental cost of posting a disc over downloading it may be enough to tip the balance. The costs, if any, are transferred to you.

GavinBKK 12-13-2011 04:58 AM

No, selecting the "disk by post" option cost an extra 12 bucks, which I duly paid.

I have Googled around and followed several tutorials to get this USB bootable, but none have worked. One even specified a "bootable checkbox" in DU that plain isn't there on this Snow Leopard iMac. Really frustrating.

Then, I tried Chronosync, but when I re-downloaded it (hadn't used it for ages), the UI has changed so much that I couldn't get it to do what I wanted. I must be thicker than I thought. It's nothing like it was a couple of years ago. :-( It had a simple layout and a bootable option then.

Any ideas for an app that can do this simply for me?

agentx 12-13-2011 07:09 AM

How big was the disk image your cloned to disk ? should be around 600MB ?
I never use Diskwarrior CD/DVD disk as it is way to slow to boot from. I generally get disk, create an updated disk image using the Alsoft Disk updater tool and clone to USB flash drive.

Never had an issue unless Apple brings out a brand new bit of hardware that the DW disk needs an update for.

agentx 12-13-2011 07:10 AM

If the disk image you downloaded/trying to image is less than 500MB it is not bootable !
The clone to USB flash drive method does work i have done it loads of time.

There is no fancy magic at all. The DMG should just restore to USB flash drive and be bootable
(There are no "bootable" options anymore) And don't forget carbon copy Cloner as well as a useful tool.

GavinBKK 12-13-2011 09:59 PM

The .dmg they fired down is 3.7Mb...

So, can't make that bootable then?

I just got a shipment notification for the disk but, with Crimbo postal delays, I have no idea when that will get here now. :-(

freelunch 12-14-2011 02:16 AM

I think the disk image you have is their updater. You have to have the original DiskWarrior CD to use the updater to create another up-to-date CD.

GavinBKK 12-14-2011 02:20 AM

No idea. The full actual app is inside the image. Just have to wait for the dvd, as I can't see another way of booting.

How about if I booted from install dvds and ran DW off the usb, or would the USB not be mounted in that scenario?

I am in a hurry because my old iMac 24 has issues that DU, Memtest and Profiler cannot identify.

agentx 12-14-2011 05:56 AM

A 3.7MB dmg cannot be a bootable Mac OS X image....not possible....
This is just the program. You will have to wait for bootable disk or create a fresh stripped back install on a 16GB+ USB drive/spare external and put diskwarrior on it.

GavinBKK 12-14-2011 07:38 AM

Thanks, but how?

The tutorials I have followed thus far have not worked.

agentx 12-14-2011 07:41 AM

Install OS onto an external Disk ( USB Flash or spare external )
http://www.maciverse.com/installing-...ard-drive.html

Boot from it, run updates and install diskwarrior. Then start fixing your iMac hopefully.

mnasersj 01-13-2012 02:43 PM

Does anyone know how to create a Bootable External firewire drive from the DiskWarrior application file.

GavinBKK 02-22-2012 05:26 AM

At great risk of oversimplification, use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your original, bootable DW DVD to your external Firewire Drive (repartition it for Apple GUID first) and you are good to go.

Worked for me after chatting with the very attentive DW support chappie. No original DVD and you are buggered. ;-)

Yes - that is the way to go.
In other words, you want to create a 2nd disk with OS X and boot from that and then your internal disk (which you want to fix) is not busy.
