What kind of music do you listen to while working?

What kind of music do you listen to while working?

I don't know about some of you guys, but I have to listen to music at work. It helps to keep me sane. I listen to basically about every kind of music minus a few genres. What do you guys listen to?

I like:
Blues
Rock N Roll
Punk
Reggae
Country (only old school Hank, Cash, Coe, Waylan, etc - I HATE NEW COUNTRY!)
some Indie
Hip Hop (not gansta rap)
Soul
Jazz
Classical
Some electronic if its done well (not big into techno)
Metal (Iron Maiden rules!)
Then there are those bands you really can't put into a genre, I like some of those as well.

djn1 07-25-2003 06:11 PM

Trance and electronic type stuff (Chicane, Chemical Brothers, Lemon Jelly, the Orb, Air, Cocteau Twins, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Vangelis, William Orbit, Brian Eno, ... and so on) or Classical (string quartets, piano concertos - nothing too busy) ... anything else and I can't concentrate at all. If I'm writing I don't listen to anything as I find it too distracting.

tlarkin 07-25-2003 06:52 PM

Cool..

yeah there are a few songs I can't listen because I will sing along with them and not really work, so I understand where you are coming from.

I like the electronic stuff like aphex twin, the stuff radio head does, and bjork. I know there are a few more but I don't know the artists names off hand.

That's why I particularly like the Cocteau Twins - their lyrics don't make any sense anyway ;)

Classical

Believe it or not, I've started listening to classical music at work. I use Windows Media Player (groan--yes, I know, I'm on a PC at work) and listen to streams from various FM stations around the country. It's quite relaxing.

(When I'm not listening to classical music my tastes range anywhere from James Taylor to Rush--the band, not the political commentator...).

The classical music is nice--I feel a lot less hectic and distracted now. Of course, I made some other changes recently to cut down on my overall stress level as well. :D

KCRW--

the NPR station out of Santa Monica, CA. Mon-Fri from 9.00-12.00 (noon) I listen to the simulcast (internet broadcast) of "Morning Becomes Eclectic". Elsewise, I listen to their internet broadcast music.

I can't recommend enough KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic".

Either the stream, Drone Zone or the simulcast of my local (Boston) NPR station, WBUR...when neither of those do the trick it's:
  • XTC
    Lloyd Cole
    The Orb
    Orbital
    Steve Reich
    Thelonius Monk
    Sugar
    Chopin mazurkas and nocturnes

I often find that when I'm working, the only kind of music that I can really listen to without getting distracted is instrumental music, like Classical or Trance/Techno. Otherwise, I end up singing along with the lyrics. :p

I like to listen to stations on the radio tuner in iTunes. Particulary Virgin Radio, it's alternative rock stuff, and RCN 9412 which is Classic Rock. They are both really good stations. Otherwise, I like to play Green Day, Save Ferris and Squirrel Nut Zippers at work a lot.

Actually, I listen to the whir of fans and hard drives.

In the work environment, I enjoy listening to silence in the background - does that make sense? :)

Modest Mouse

The kind of music I like is Modest Mouse. Of course, I admit that I'm a little obsessed, but the point still remains that it's just about entirely what I listen to. :D

tlarkin 08-11-2003 01:32 PM

isn't modest mouse emo?

djkowall 08-12-2003 12:20 PM

Blues
Guitar Driven Rock
There is nothing else.

tlarkin 08-12-2003 01:27 PM

Today I am listening to the dirtbombs. If you like rock n roll, and if you like soul, then you will love the dirt bombs. Check out their album ultra glide in black. It rules!

I listen to rock. Stuff like Creed, Queen, Jeff Scott Soto, Godsmack; that sort of music.

m51 08-19-2003 08:05 AM

No, Modest Mouse isn't emo.

mervTormel 08-19-2003 12:00 PM

uh, according to allmusic.com, and my sensibilities, Modest Mouse is/has been of the Emo genre.

tlarkin 08-19-2003 12:03 PM

I used to date a girl who was into emo thats how I know all the emo bands. Not my prefered choice but to each their own.

yellow 08-19-2003 02:30 PM

Yup its all recycled, and will be for a while.

You can get even more specific nowadays though with genres such as:

surf punk
garage
grind core
tribal metal
emo
screamo (apparently this is hardcore emo??)
tech metal
thrash

etc. etc.
