Panther speed : hot or not?

Yummy. Drool-a-rama at the WWDC.

I sooooooo want Panther. I soooooo want a G5.

Financially, Panther is looking a LOT closer at the moment, so the question is how is it going to look on my G4 733?

Yep, Panther is a financial possibility that, in my case, wouldn't necessitate a divorce whereas a G5 probably would.

As for how it will look: anywhere between 8.4% slower and no different than it will be on my G4/800 :D

Has anyone seen specs for it yet? Will it be possible to release a 32bit version for the G4/3s of the world and a 64bit optimized version for the 5s? Or can one release incoporate both? Will this be Gollum/Smeagol or is that the next Jaguar release they'll put on the G5s that ship prior to Panther's release?

(Yeah right they'll ship G5s in August ;))

Going out on a limb, it wouldn't surprise me if the 10.3 installer can divine which machine you use and decide which build you deserve. I wonder if the whole thing will be on one DVD disk?

As for speed, I don't think I'll assault my machines with 10.3 until I see some reports.

Smeagol! I expect Tolkien's estate to sue.

DVD disk? I hope not, given that I only have a CD/RW.

Your G4800 doesn't have a combo drive?

Lets flush that thought down the toilet.

yellow 06-25-2003 07:53 AM

The last couple MDD G4s that I've gotten came with 10.2.4 & extraneous software junk installer on a DVD.

Nope, just a CD-RW :(

Probably the restore discs will be DVD's and the standalone retail copies will continue to be on CD.

Edit - still waiting to hear exact hardware requirements for Panther. I suppose they may not be finalized yet, given that it's another 4-6 months before release.

I take it there isn't any doubt that all the G4's will be supported?

I think the issue is Quartz Extreme; required or not?

Only Steve's hairdresser knows for sure. :p

OK, I guess that makes sense.

Ah, familiarity.

I once tried the same argument with her new shoes...

Man that couch is uncomfortable.

Craig R. Arko 06-25-2003 09:43 AM

OK, I've seen some reports of people claiming that DP1 runs (slightly deprecated) without Quartz Extreme.

If so, then this should be good to go on the same H/W as Jag.

Panther runs on all G4's, as well as all G3's with onboard USB.

Also, for the most part it will NOT be 64-bit. Honestly, that makes sense as the apps that will best benefit from 64-bit code are the heftier ones, namely Final Cut, Shake, Photoshop, Mathematica, etc.

Exposé requires Quartz Extreme. 'nuff said.

The current seed of Panther gets over twice the performance that Jaguar got in XBench. Now while some (including myself) consider XBench crap, this still indicates a level of optimization and performance work Apple's done thus far.

Curious. Where did you see/hear that? I was under the impression (as of about noon) that this information was not yet released to the public.

Expose works on my G4/350 with an ancient Rage128Pro 16MB - certainly not a QE gpu.

Probably the same place you saw/heard, huh? ;)

Uhhh.. the same place that I read that there were no public specs for Panther yet, later released those non-existent public specs that they didn't have? Neat trick, AKcrab! ;)

What's OS X currently supported for? All G4's plus G3's with onboard USB. Will it work on others? Yes, is it supported? No.

Exposé has QE written all over it.

Wonder how it's going to like my WallStreet PowerBook and its ADB and SCSI ports and whatnot?

I'd like to hold onto it until the G5 PowerBooks come out.

It and the user switch work without QE. You don't get the 'spinning cube' effect on the user switch w/o QE, but it switches users.
