Safari 1.0
Is anyone else having MAJOR problems with the "final" release of Safari? I installed it just now, and I can't get any reliable results. Slashdot a) won't load, and b) causes a problem that crashes safari when you try to navigate to any other page. ESPN.com fails to load anything. cnn.com pauses midstream, albeit most of the way through loading...
No amount of trashing ~/Library/Caches/Safari and/or ~/Library/Safari has helped. I tried to delete and revert to v80, but the installer won't let me do that... just has a big red ! on the drive icon and tells me I've been bad or some such... Any ideas? Eric |
No problems here.. The fonts all seem larger.
|
pithhelmet installed? that's bork'd.
|
I'm replying right now with safari 1.0 seems to work just fine.
J |
I've been to CNN and ESPN and no problems. I have yet to try Pogo.com and see if it still bombs. So far 1.0 works like a champ.
|
Safari 1.0 is working great for me, in fact, all my settings from Safari Enhancer 2.0.3 seem to have stayed, along with all my saved passwords. The only real difference I can see is that it seems to be faster, slashdot is really jetty now. Perhaps you got a bunk copy. Did you try deleting your copy from /Applications and then try re-installing 1.0 (or perhaps even an older version)?
|
Better Installer
normally when i'm updating apple apps, i move them back to the /applications folder.
i forgot when installing Safari 1.0, but the installer managed to find where i'd moved the app (in a subfolder inside /applications), and it updated successfully. cool. the dreaded underlined links is back, at least until safari enhancer updates. uncool. |
hmm, no underlined links here.
|
Anybody try any secure sites yet, like financial and bank sites? I must know before attempting an upgrade.
|
wells fargo banking works here.
|
e*trade bank works here.
fxt |
That's encouraging since I think it was one of the problem sites a ways back from here.
Anybody else tested with some other secure sites? fxt, you beat me to the draw. Thanks, I use both of those. |
Citibank works....
Hey, you're not getting a list of everyones bank account are you ;) J |
Nope. Not so far anyway. :)
That's interesting because Citibank was reported to be a problem for someone over at MFI in the comments on today's front page. I don't use them but do use Smith Barney which is owned by Citibank although I didn't have any problem with them in the previous beta 2 v74. |
citibank works, but upon returning to their site it does not retain the login info :( I am able to login and do things, but I'll have to enter my info every time...
I noticed that the page does a browser check, it must not store information for certain browsers... J |
Doesn't Safari Enhancer have a preference to change the user agent that would fix that problem?
For me, I don't want them retaining my login info just in case somebody untrustworthy gets a hold of my rig. |
I just installed safari enhancer I don't see anything like that in there. If there is something that does that I'd sure like to know about it :D
J |
Although UserAgent has been mentioned in a number of places about Safari Enhancer on the net, I can't find it within the application either. Very strange! I even checked the online help pages too.
It's my understanding that what it does is fool web sites into thinking you're using a different more popular browser so you can log in. Perhaps it's in the version for v80 that comes together with 2.0.3. But it isn't listed as such in the read me so I don't know for sure. Does anyone else know about the UserAgent feature of Safari Enhancer? |

Thanks mT. I hadn't used the Debug menu until now. So far, I didn't have a reason to that I knew of.
I noticed that User Agent is automatically chosen by default and that has apparently worked well for me and the different financial sites I frequent. |
This does allow me to change the user agent, but sadly, I tried with both mozilla and ms IE settings and neither allowed the saving of my info :(
I launched mozilla and logged in and it saved my info. I guess I'll just need to use mozilla to pay the bills. J |
Geez. That's too bad. I don't understand why it would do that for you and that one site. Or does it do it with other sites too?
You still don't have to use Mozilla to pay the bills, if you don't mind entering in your user name and password for Citibank when you do from Safari. |
Every other site works fine, and mozilla on mac works. Seems to be something with the citibank site. I wish it were just entering a username and password, but I have to enter an entire 16 digit card number, then a pin. Usually, after you enter it the first time it saves it under your name and then you just enter your pin number from now on. But now I have to enter that entire 16 digit number again :( I'm sure eventually I'll memorize it if I keep typing it in enough. But I think I'll just stick with mozilla when I need to pay the bills. No biggie. Better than having to use my windows machine ;)

I was using the public betas just fine... never had any problems. All of a sudden, the official release just won't work. Eric |
OIC. Well, it's not too much of a bother for you to use Mozilla then, that's good.
At some point, Citibank should be told about this though. I never knew a person had to go through all that with the 16 characters and all. At least with others like Merrill Lynch, you can check a box to save that kind of info. But as I had said, I don't do it that way for security reasons. I'll bet if you were on a Windoze machine running, say, Crazy Browser, you might have the same problem. But who wants to try that out anyway. :D |
:) FANTASTIC!!!!!
Movie trailers once again work at Internet Movie Data Base site.... No problems with Capital One site here. |

1.0 Sucks for Me
I'm having the same problems as Eric. 1.0 won't load but a small handful of pages (even local pages won't load) and it crashes constantly.
Any luck on getting it to work? I have trashed preferences, plist files, cache, etc. No luck. HELP!!! |
Hmm.. got any Safari hacks or "Speed Download"-type hacks installed? Funky plug-ins?

Frustrated & Annoyed |
* fonts bigger
* dang underline links * seems to open more links in new windows even though I have it set to use current window. PhpMyAdmin was a good example. Every click would open a new window, which sort of defeats the purpose of the frames in PHPMyAdmin. * no other problems FYI - PithHelmet developer has a working version for 1.0 but no installer. You can download it here, but you will need your old PithHelmet parts to install it. http://www.culater.net/osd/PithHelme...t-0.6.2-27.tgz Download the file and decompress, inside is a file called "PithHelmet.bundle". Move that file into your old PithHelmet install - probably ~/Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/Plugins replacing the file already there. |

I'm having the same problem as Eric - constant crashes, very few pages load reliably. The betas worked reasonably well.

in the advanced pref style sheet: ( somefile.css ) i have the following line: a:link { color: blue; text-decoration: none; } i believe that : none; affects the underlining. |
font smoothing?
Another problem. I can't seem to get the right font smoothing setting on Safari. I have the "turn off font smoothing" in the system preferences set to 10. This seems to be the best setting for most other things. But at this setting, the text in Safari often looks blurry. Internet Explorer (blech!) had a separate setting for turning off font smoothing at font sizes independent of the system preferences. I usually set that to 18 or so. That worked really well, text looked great. Despite everything that I've tried, the text in IE looks way better than Safari.
Am I overlooking something? |

- where would i find that file? - do i need to have specifically created a style sheet? |
yeah, just make a text file somewhere
|
Re: Re: Re: Underlined Links
OK, mervTormel. your help has gotten me halfway home. i created a style sheet with the line you provided.
the good part: non-visited links are now non-underlined. the bad part: visited links are still underlined. using safari enhancer, i was previously able to make ALL links non-underlined. |
ah, regrets. here's more:
a:link { color: blue; text-decoration: none; } a:link:active { color: black; outline: gray 1px dotted; } a:visited { color: navy; text-decoration: none; } a:visited:active { color: black; outline: gray 1px dotted; } /* a:hover { color: red; text-decoration: underline; } */ a:hover { color: blue; text-decoration: underline; } |
First Hawaiian Bank Finally Works (Sort Of)
With previous versions of Safari I wasn't even able to log in to my First Hawaiian account. The JavaScript wouldn't execute. Safari 1.0 does this just fine and the rest of the site seems to function as expected, except that on the "Transfers" page dollar amounts of account balances do not display. (Camino fails here as well. IE does it correctly.)
Almost there, but not quite.... |
mervTormel,
as usual, you da man. --- the minimalist style sheet to be rid of those pesky underlines is, of course: a:link { text-decoration: none; } a:visited { text-decoration: none; } --- now, do you have any idea how to get new tabs to load with the home page, instead of blank? |

Interesting new feature I haven't seen discussed is the "Auto-Tab" for folders in the Bookmarks Bar.
Can set a folder now to automatically open in tabs. Now if we could only set a preference for new links to auto open in a tab, I'd be totally happy. And to think, six months ago I didn't know what "tabbed browsing was." |
just go into preferences, and in general - check the radio box for opening new links "in the current window". if you have tabs enabled, they'll open in a new tab in the current window. woohoo!
and aside, have tabs unchecked in "Select new tabs as created", and then map your third button or scroll button (if you have one) as Command-Click. that way, you can open up stacks of links off one page, then browse through all the tabs at your leasure. VERY useful on dialup, as you can download pages behind the current one as you peruse for more clickable links.. |
I bank at www.firstnational.com and I have no problems with Safari 1.0, I can't say the same of Mozilla 1.4 or Camino 0.7. IE handles the site fine, but Moz and Camino have problems with it. Also, if you're using Safari Enhancer 2.0.3, you shouldn't have to enable the debug menu from command line. Just quit Safari, launch Safari Enhancer, Check 'Debugging Menu' and click 'Apply'. Quit Safari Enhancer and re-launch Safari. Viola.

I saw some talking about Safari font changes, you be interested to read the Surfin' Safari blog by Hyatt..

Smartforce still doesn't work on Safari 1.0. Heck it doesn't work on any Mac browsers! Anybody know why?

I still can't understand why Safari (or OmniWeb for that matter) won't allow one to go to iCards and send a customized card from the picture folder on their iDisk. But for this I could and would purge my disk of Internet Explorer.

Just to bring this lengthy thread full circle, I have successfully gotten safari 1.0 to work. I logged into my testuser account and Safari worked just fine. Figured it had to be something in my user account, likely something in ~/Library.
All I had to do was to move my entire ~/Library to ~/Library.bak and log out/in. Once I did that, Safari started working, so I copied the following from Library.bak back into Library: Addresses/ Application Support/AddressBook Calendars/ Mail/ Mozilla/ (yah, still use it some...) PDF Services/ Preferences/ iApps/ iMovie/ iTunes/ I again logged out/in to make changes take effect. I lost all my keychain passwords, but they are mostly the same (and I wonder if a corrupted keychain was causing the problems to begin with). Likewise all my auto-login cookies, but again, I typically use a common on-line passwd. Everything seems to be back to normal... mostly posting this in hopes it helps someone else. Eric |

It's a font problem!
I duplicated Eric's research and found that, indeed, Safari 1.0 worked with ~/Library cleared out. I moved things in bit by bit, and traced the problem to one file: ~/Library/Fonts/Times RO . Removing that file and logging out and back in seems to have cleared up the crashing/hanging problem. Can anyone else confirm this? (Maybe it will be a different font on other systems.)
--Kevin |
No, that's not it on my system. I copied my Times RO font file from Library.bak/Fonts to Library/Fonts, then logged out and back in. No Safari problems... I'm just happy that I have Safari back... I'm slowly recovering all my preferences/settings.

Internet Plug-ins Problems
I do not even have that font installed on my system.
After backing out my ~/Library to Library.bak as suggested I went through the long process of testing what would cause my problems with Safari. When I got to the QuickTime Plugin.plugin in the Internet Plug-ins folder Safari started to crash as I had been expiriencing. When the plug in was removed there was no problems. Placing the plug in again caused the crashes. The problem continued even after reinstalling QT. I have submitted the bug to Apple. Could someone test this situation. The QuickTime Plugin.plugin is version 6.3 dated 5/27/02 Showing the contents and looking at the property list: BuildVersion = 73 SourceVersion = 1742000 |
Did anyone ever find out what was going on here? I have a friend that just installed Safari 1.0 and is having the same problem? (Crashing all the time, pages not loading right). I told him I would see if anyone here knew about it? Has anyone tried logging in as a different User and then trying safari again? I personally havn't had any problems with 1.0.
|
For reinstalling the older version, you have to make sure that the Safari.pkg file is removed from your Library/Receipts folder. Then the older version should reinstall. Give it a try. Good Luck.
