PowerMac G5 Specs leaked by Apple!!

Anybody else notice all the news? Apple leaked the specs on the new PowerMacs on the Apple Store! www.macminute.com and www.macrumors.com have the news.

In short, here are the specs:

-- 1.6GHz, 1.8GHz or Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 processors

-- Up to 1GHz processor bus

-- Up to 8GB of DDR SDRAM

-- Fast Serial ATA hard drives

-- AGP 8X Pro graphics options from NVIDIA or ATI

-- Three PCI or PCI-X expansion slots

-- Three USB 2.0 ports

-- One FireWire 800, two FireWire 400 ports

-- Bluetooth & AirPort Extreme ready

-- Optical and analog audio in and out

That sounds like one heck of a machine and better than anyone was expecting! Now all we need to see is the appearance and price. :)

and for those of us who were at the store.apple.com site when it was up it was even cooler.

so here's what i saw:

Should be some new job openings in Cupertino later today. :p

Dual 2 gigs? That outpaces even the wildest rumors.

I'm sure hoping there are some of these babies sitting in the back rooms of the Apple Stores; it may be well worth it sticking around after watching the keynote broadcast.

edit - there is going to be a time delayed webcast of the keynote later on Monday.

yellow 06-20-2003 10:39 AM

I have heard rumors from multiple sources that there are large & small delivered palettes at Apple Stores across the US, and that the employees are under strict instructions not to open (or peek) until Monday.

:D

bassi 06-20-2003 03:29 PM

Here's Steve Jobs' response.

:D

griffman 06-20-2003 03:38 PM

My thoughts ...

I believe Apple did it on purpose, for a few reasons. One, it's a cool marketing trick to increase the buzz :-). Two, it gives the rumor sites something to talk about and yee-ha over for a day or two (see next sentence). Three, it prevents the rumor sites from focusing on the fact that this is the "year of the notebook" and rumoring about what might be the REAL big news on Monday ... I would think Apple would be quite capable of pulling off just such a stunt.

If it's true, it may be time to "buy now, figure out how to pay later" on Monday when they're rolled out ... anyone wanna buy a G4/733 for, oh, I dunno, $5,000 or so? I'll even throw in a licensed copy of Jaguar and a free spare mouse :-).

-rob.

jdhorner 06-20-2003 03:58 PM

and if you act now, I'LL throw in an iBook for some of the action. i'm already drooling and i don't really know over what yet.

:D

yellow 06-20-2003 04:13 PM

After 6PM on Monday, there will be a very tall man seen lurking around the Apple Store at Southpoint Mall in Durham, NC.

At least my stock is going up over all this hype.. maybe it'll actually get back to the $20s and I can break even. :)

mervTormel 06-20-2003 04:21 PM

yellow?! are you stalking that guy again?!

interesting blurb from a channel rep

http://techs.rosai.com/pro/info.html

this was reported on one of the rumor sites yesterday

yellow 06-20-2003 04:38 PM

Only if "in the bushes" was inserted above :)

griffman 06-20-2003 04:43 PM

I just double-checked, and the Bellevue store is not showing the keynote -- whew. Saved myself a six-hour roundtrip auto trip and a day of vacation there! ;-)

-rob.

Craig R. Arko 06-20-2003 05:47 PM

Well, if they actually have a demo model at the Mall of America I'll try to get a few minutes with it to get an impression, and post it here.

I expect the crowd will be hip deep.

yellow 06-20-2003 06:09 PM

Same here..

yellow 06-23-2003 07:02 AM

Soooooooooo depressed ... even if they're planning on giving them away I suspect that it will be at least a year before I can convince the rest of the household that it's an essential purchase

yellow 06-23-2003 07:26 AM

Don't be depressed djn, think of it like this.. the first machines will be highly sought after, very expensive, and slow to ship. Invariably there will be some bugs, and after a year they will be ironed out, and you can have more time to plan your emotional and mental attack on the rest of the household. :)

ugh.. that guy. Until I saw this, I didn't think he could get more annoying.. I was wrong, so very very wrong.

Wouldn't you know it? We found a house we want to buy and have to meet our realtor there this afternoon, don't these people know I have scheduled lurk time in the Apple Store?

Wow. That's some pretty serous pit-rott going on there.

Does anyone else think he kinda looks like Frankenstein's monster a-la Young Frankenstein?

yellow 06-23-2003 07:41 AM

heh Peter Boyle, yes.

Good point ... I'll start the campaign later this evening :D

Craig R. Arko 06-23-2003 08:08 AM

Another reason to think the leak might have been staged is to take all the steam out from under these announcements from Intel, which were probably timed to try to take the steam out of the WWDC announcements. :p

bassi 06-23-2003 11:07 AM

When is Wintel going to learn. No matter how much whirlwind spin they create today, Jobs et. al. have a tornado in their pockets (not just happy to see me -tee hee) which will warp reality to a fever pitch.

The thing to watch is the ars technica boards and slashdot as x86ers go 'head-to-head' with 970ers. If the specs are *That Good* then their manhood will feel threatened and that, no matter which way you feel, will be fun to watch.

-caveat, I'm quite secure with my G4. ;)

yellow 06-23-2003 01:32 PM

ooooOOoooOOOooo Apple Store online is down right now :)

You guys are acting like children!

[INTERNAL DIALOG]
me: my machine is only 550Mhz
me: the new G5 has dual 2Ghz!
me: my machine IS pretty slow...
me: imagine what I could do with a new G5...
me: not to mention that my machine has a loud fan...
me: I have been behind the times for a while...
me: 8GB of RAM!
me: that'll hold an entire swap file for any image I could open in Photoshop!
me: (it could probably hold three files worth of swap!)
me: 500GB!
me: you'll never need that!
me: So!
[/INTERNAL DIALOG]

...

...

um... I'll be taking donations from my web site. If anyone has a few extra bucks... I'll surely put it to good use (I'll even let you touch it) :D

:D :D Oh it'll be encased in one of those science lab style glass cubes!... With two portals connected to thick black rubber gloves!

I'll be with yellow. We're going to use the RV as a stakeout vehicle (it's 1974 exterior wil surely blend in!) ;)

[edit] oops, I accidentally clicked 'new thread' instead of 'post reply'... [/edit]

[edit] ... um, no I didn't. It was actually just a new page to this thread... [/edit]

*sigh* How boring looking.

djn1 06-23-2003 03:56 PM

yep, they look pretty cool - anyone want to buy a second hand grandmother? ;)

[edit - boring? so they look like a cross between an aircon unit and, err, ... a grey box. I can live with that /edit]

zeb 06-23-2003 04:08 PM

When the initial picture loaded, I though that it was missing a gif or something. The perforations in the case look like a 50% gray (you know - the old style that was made up of black and white pixels) - I kept waiting for the rest of the image to load...

I think it looks kinda wierd, but so did the Dodge Rams when they first started with the curvey hoods in '96.

Oh, well. djn1 - I guess the glass science-lab-style cube will have to be opaque ;)

i think it looks awesome. understated grace. and the cooling requirements dictated the design. i wonder how hot these girls are. who's gonna bench the 2x2GHz for us in august?

check out the image gallery...

yellow 06-23-2003 04:41 PM

Square, grey, aluminum. It looks like the bastard child of a speaker & fridge.. it's... boring looking. Someone squished the xServe and made it my desktop tower. Doesn't mean I won't buy one, I just didn't expect what I shall heretofore dub 'The Rhombus'.

Less is NOT always more.

Is it just me or is there some strange sexual tension evident in Merv's choice of words? ;)

yellow 06-23-2003 04:54 PM

Well my dual 500s at Work are getting on the slow side. I figure by the time the dual 3k Rhombus appears, I'll be ripe and ready for a new machine. *aquiver*

strange. erm, normal tension here.

now, show us your girls!

griffman 06-23-2003 05:55 PM

Earlier, I wrote:

"I believe Apple did it on purpose, for a few reasons."

Hmm, based on what Steve said, I guess I now need to open mouth, insert foot, close mouth, chew :-). In any event, I think the new design is quite classy looking, but what I really like is the statement on the PowerMac Design page that reads (my emphasis added):
Quote:

As a result, the Power Mac G5 runs three times quieter than the previous Power Mac G4 enclosure.
Anyone wanna buy a G4/733 for, um, $2999? ;-)

Actually, strangely coincidental though it may seem, I have a G4/800 going for exactly the same price ;)

griffman 06-23-2003 06:00 PM

Hmm, guess my thought that they sneaked the new specs on purpose was a mistake ... open mouth, insert foot, bite :-). Oh well!

Anyway, I find the new design quite classy looking. But what I really liked what this quote on the PowerMac Design page (my emphasis added):
Quote:

If that's measured against the "newest" quieter G4s, that could make for a very quiet machine, indeed!

-rob.

Craig R. Arko 06-23-2003 06:51 PM

On the whole, I'd say they (the G5's) don't suck. And I'm still not convinced the leak wasn't deliberate. ;)

As far as Panther goes, I think the Xcode tools are pretty sweet; and the builtin replacement for Distiller may turn out to be quite the thing.

I remain a little less convinced about the iTunes Finder, although the 'find' speed sure looked impressive.

I'm thinking many of the new features will require Quartz Extreme to be useful. There was no notion of system requirements mentioned that I can tell.
