Strange Behavior: Apple Home Page GIF not loading
Here's a strange one:
On my Powerbook the new Apple home page touting iSync is not loading completely. It's only a single GIF that's not loading but it's right in the middle of the page. It does not work on any of the browsers on my Powerbook (I have IE, Omniweb, Camino, Safari, etc.) However--this is the strange part--this GIF loads in my IE browser at work on my computer running Windows XP. Couuld there be a problem with my computer setting at home? This is really strange.... |
Fine here (with Safari). I take it you've tried clearing the caches of your various browsers?
|
How can I post a screen shot? On Safari you can't see anything, it's just a blank space below the laptop and the phones. In Camino, you can see the where the GIF should load.
BTW, yes I have cleared the cache, etc. Really strange.... |
You have some sort of content filtering in place? Like privoxy?
|
No Content filtering. If you control-click on the place where the GIF is supposed to load and choose view image it returns this message:
The image “http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/83...e06042003.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. |
I've just had a look at the source of that page and there doesn't seem to be anything odd about it. If you try it does it display the image:
http://a512.g.akamai.net/7/512/51/34...er06032003.jpg |
The url you posted (http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/83...le06042003.gif) gives me the text under the images - which starts with 'iSync 1.1 More ways to sync ...' etc
|
Yes, it displays the image with the Laptop and all the phones. However on my WinXP box at work there is a large banner below that image: ISync 1.1 and something else. That's not loading. In Safari you can't see anything, it's just a blank space. In Camino you can see where the banner should load. Is there anyway I can post a screen shot?
Thanks! |
To DJN:
Yes, That's the Banner! But it doesn't load. It's driving me crazy.... |
You could always try resetting Safari (and losing some settings) - it might work, though as all your other browsers are having the same problem I suspect not. This is a weird one.
|
To DJN:
It's really wierd because the link you sent me above worked when I first clicked on it and now it doesn't work when I click on it. This is really crazy! |
I discovered something really strange:
Click on this link: http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/83...le06042003.gif Now, click on this link: http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/83...e06042003.gif? The first one doesn't work, the second one does. The only difference is that there is a question mark at the end of the second link. That question mark is not in the link on the page. Any ideas? |
The link you originally posted ended in a question mark as follows:
http:// ... isync11title06042003.gif? Which I noticed after copying it into my post, so I edited it out as follows: http:// ... isync11title06042003.gif Do either of the above work for you? |
Alternatively, try:
http://www.apple.com/home/images/200...le06042003.gif This has the 'http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/83cb264be6ec5c/' stripped from the start of the url but still displays the image on my box. |
Yes, the first one works fine. The second one is the one that gives me the error message. And that's the one in the source code.
|
Yes the one without the http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/83cb264be6ec5c works fine too.

Try clearing your cache again, and restarting your browser.
[wow, I just got the 'you can only post one message every 60 seconds' error - I haven't seen that before] |
I would just like to add, not that it's going to help at all, that the second link with the question mark loads fine on my Titanium. I'm using Camino 0.7 with all cache routed to /dev/null.
|
Hi DJN,
Thanks for you assistance. It's not related to my browser because I have cleared the cache and restarted, etc. but it still doesn't load. Here's the URL I pulled from the source code (I cut and paste this): http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/83...le06042003.gif Okay, it doesn't work. It gives me an error message. I don't know why but nothing comes up. If I use only this part: http://www.apple.com/home/images/200...le06042003.gif This works fine. I don't know why but I've never had this problem and it's really strange. |
Just another quick question: Does everyone go through akamai.net to get to Apple? The reason I ask is because it works fine when you use the URL that does not go through akamai.net. When you go through akamai.net it doesn't work. I wonder if that's the reason....
Just a thought... |
Well, I don't know where else to go with this but I decided to open up a Citrix session (thin client connection to a Windows 2000 server at my work). I opened IE and the page displayed fine, the GIF displayed fine, no problems. So then I opened up Virtual PC running XP Pro. I opened IE and went to the Apple home page and the GIF did not load. THe only difference is when using Citrix, I am actually connecting to my office LAN and when I open a browser in Citrix, the data is coming through the ISP at work. When I open a browser in Virtual PC (or any of my native Mac browsers) I am using my home ISP. It is the strangest thing I have ever encountered....
