Maxtor 7Y250M0

Can I use a Maxtor 7Y250M0 in a mac pro?

NaOH 05-06-2011 11:38 PM

In current Mac Pro models, yes. Probably in many past models, too, but I'm assuming you are thinking about current models. If not, just tell us which Mac Pro model this hard drive would be in.

Most likely, you'll want to format the hard rive when you get it because most hard drives come formatted for Windows computers. To format a hard drive so it is using the Mac formatting system is very easy. It just takes a couple minutes using the built-in Disk Utility application. If you don't already know how to do this, instructions can be found on this page. One additional thing to note since it's not really mentioned on that page is that formatting a hard drive will erase it, so you will want to format the drive after you install it but before you copy any files to it.

It wont alow a HD next to it:-(

Can you tell us which Mac Pro you have? That will help people provide assistance. If you don't know which Mac Pro, simply follow these steps:
  1. From the Apple menu, select About This Mac.
  2. Click the button that says More Info.
  3. This will open System Profiler.
  4. The main part of the window will show the Hardware Overview. Tell us what it says on the second line, where it says Model Identifier.

Eh, that statement is just a little vague...
You'll need to explain what "it" might be.

Do you mean that Disk Utility won't let you name the drive?

Could you now answer DeltaMac's question? Is the problem that the hard drive doesn't physically fit in the machine or is the problem when you are in Disk Utility?

jareddigby 05-07-2011 12:06 AM

I’ve ga 2 HDs in bays 1,3 not 1, 2 :-(

NaOH 05-07-2011 12:17 AM

I'm wondering if the problem is that the drive is too big. This page says the drive is 4 inches wide, but the Mac Pro can only accept drives which are 3.9 inches (102 mm) wide. If the problem is with the width of the drive, you may want to measure to check if the drive you want to install is too big.

DeltaMac 05-07-2011 08:28 AM

Really?
Is that your situation? When mounted on the removable sled, the drive won't slide into the slot? If the drive/sled doesn't seem to fit - have you tried swapping the drives around? Could be that one slot is more tolerant of a slight size variation.

If it doesn't fit, you may need to use an external case.
What's special about that hard drive? Do you have important data on that hard drive that needs backing up

It fita I just wanted my WD drive beside it

NaOH 05-10-2011 05:30 PM

If this Maxtor drive fit, then what problem are you having?

jareddigby 05-10-2011 05:36 PM

i want a drive next to it

NaOH 05-10-2011 05:39 PM

Maybe I'm not understanding. The Mac Pro haas four drive bays. You said before two of them are already being used. If this Maxtor drives fits, then what is a problem Since I'm having trouble following you, please use lots of details.

jareddigby 05-10-2011 05:49 PM

I have Maxtor in bay 1 & WD in 3 want in 1. 2

NaOH 05-10-2011 05:51 PM

Have you tried placing the WD drive in bay 2? Either way, drive performance should not be affected by which bays are being used, so I'm not certain why it would matter which bays are holding your hard drives.

The Maxtor made b4 mac pro

trevor 05-10-2011 06:29 PM

jareddigby, you've got two top-notch people attempting to help you with your problem, and in return for their attention you're giving them...pretty much nothing. You answer questions with grammatically poor non-answers like, "The Maxtor made b4 mac pro" that are completely lacking in information and are nonsensical. If you don't give some of your attention to writing a complete answer to the questions that are asked of you, then people here have no reason to help you at all.

It’s wider then WD drve:-( Came out of a G5.

DeltaMac 07-04-2011 07:43 PM

All 3.5-inch hard drives are the same width - so, if that hard drive cam out of a G5 tower, then you still have the locator screws in the sides. Those are the black, round head screws used to guide the hard drive into the rack of a G5 tower. You can easily remove those screws, and use in the MacPro. That Maxtor drive will then slide right in - I am certain...

But - why are you trying to use a 'used' hard drive in your MacPro? You can purchase a much larger capacity new hard drive for less than $50

That drive is worth about $30. Drill a hole in it and throw it away.
