Migrate from Mail.app to Entourage - how?

I've had a good Google'ing around (probably not enough), but I can't seem to find a great guide on how to do this.
I've tried the Import option in Entourage, but it doesn't work (nothing happens).

Any help is much appreciated

Running Mail App 4.0 and Snow Leopard 10.6.6 on a Macbook Pro

Just to add that my mail accounts are POP3 and also, it's Entourage 2008.

In Apple Mail
File > Import Mailboxes > Choose Entourage
Should bring everything in

dockerslund 05-04-2011 06:16 AM

But I'm not going to import into Apple Mail.
I'm going to import into Entourage from Apple Mail.

agentx 05-04-2011 07:36 AM

oops sorry about that.
Do you really want to use Entourage ! If so what compelling reasons.
IMHO there are a few reasons Exchange Server and possible project manager.
Sync functions are very bad !

So you have tried to import in Entourage and it fails ?
If so did you File > Import > Information from another Application > Apple Mail > checked messages, Accounts etc
You must Quit Apple Mail before import.

Have you updated Entourage to latest version.
Create a new identity and try import.

Entourage/File/Import/Import from other applications/ choose Apple Mail. That will give you the choice for a variety of info to import from Mail. I suppose you want Messages.

This would also assume that your Mail folder is in the usual location (your user/Library/Mail folder.

Note: Mail.app current version is 4.5
Maybe it would help if you updated your OS X system, which should aslo bring Mail up-to-date - also make sure that Entourage is current at version 12.2.9

Thanks for your answers.

I would HATE to leave Mail App, but I've got no choice.
It's basically behaving really really strangely.

I created another thread about the problem, but I'll sum it up again:
I've got 6 email addresses set up in Mail App.
5 of them are Google Apps addresses and 1 of them isn't.
They're all POP3.
From my home internet connection, it often takes a very long time for Mail App to send my Google Apps emails. Sometimes it takes 10 mins.
Sometimes it even comes up and says that the SMTP rejected (I think it says something about the password not being OK). If I then try again with the same SMTP, it works. Sometimes I can also speed it all up by quitting Mail App (while it's sending) and then restart it. Then it sends the message immediately.

I haven't got this problem with the non-Google Apps email address (it sends the mails immediately).

And I haven't got this problem, if I connect to another internet connection (it sends the mails immediately).

And finally...I haven't got this problem either, if I send with Entourage (or even Windows Live Mail, as I run Windows 7 too, via Fusion 3).

I've basically just had enough of all this.
Again, I would HATE to leave Mail App, but I can't sit all day and have to waste time with this software.
I've got no clue what it wrong with it

Would it really be worth it, if I delete and reinstall Mail App?
And is this easy to do?

(sorry, I'm a bit of a rookie)

Sounds like at home you may have a DNS problem slow in resolving SMTP and/or an issue authenticating to smtp.gmail.com.

Usually you would clean all passwords for smtp.gmail.com from Keychain access and re-eneter.
Reset all SMTP servers for each account making sure correct login details are entered for each Google Apps account.

Are you sending on port 25 ? or 465 for SSL / 587 for TLS connections.
I always set this up with 465 as a manual entry in SMTP server settings.

Do not delete POP accounts from apple mail as it will delete all Mail !
But luckily google is a long term mail storage vault if that setting is enabled in gmail.
ie. Store all mail on server.

I support a ton of users on Google Apps, Gmail etc and 95% of mac users use Apple Mail without too many issues (only basic niggles). We use POP and IMAP setups.

After reading your info more thoughtfully, I would say that Apple Mail is having authentication issues to smtp.gmail.com.

Oddly enough we have had slow sending issues with our email accounts over the past 6 months in Entourage, we went through the usual fault finding process above and even swapped to Outlook to see if it would resolve the problem...but it didn't. So I'm of the opinion that it is our email service provider Names.co.uk who are causing the problem. We have an authenticated SMTP service with them and when sending mail with 10-20 recipients copied in it's been taking 30mins to leave the outbox, single emails can take up to 2mins to leave. Names.co claim it's not their systems causing the problem. Our next step move all our email accounts to Zen.

Regarding your original post...I would set up one of your problematic accounts in Entourage as a test before importing everything, just in case a quirky setting is causing the problem. Oh...and if you can afford it go for Outlook 2011 as it breaks the database into individual files, as opposed to Entourage which creates an ever expanding email database which takes ages to backup. We had Entourage accounts of up to 22gig and adding a few emails still meant the backup had to copy the 22gig file, now our backups are done in minutes.

Thanks for your answers.
So you recommend that I delete everything in the key chain (which has got something to do with smtp.gmail.com ?)

dockerslund 05-05-2011 07:35 AM

Hi Soho,
Yes, I did indeed set it up in Entourage and it sent the email instantly.
...but I really want to stay with Mail App :-(

agentx 05-05-2011 07:40 AM

Two Stages.

Delete all smtp.gmail.com references from Keychain Access

In Apple mail remove all SMTP servers and re-enter make sure you check a box to only use this server for each account ( ie. smtp.gmail.com:accountname) These have to match each account or you will get time outs and authentication issues.
Which i think where your problem is.

agentx 05-05-2011 07:50 AM

@soho Yep as email has become the staple filing system for most folks, Entourage is a huge #fail due to the Database swelling. I have spent so much time fixing, migrating users from Entourage over last few years as corruption of DB was a weekly problem with people with large databases. Outlook 2011 is a big improvement but has bugs still and causing some headaches. But slowly saying goodbye only 1 site still using Entourage horray ! Will be glad to see the back of it from a sysadmin perspective.

soho 05-05-2011 08:17 AM

If you haven't got a handy copy of your SMTP passwords you can show the password in Keychain before deleting...or maybe its best to re-enter them.

@agentx Entourage has been the bane of my life as studio manager over the past 6 years, thank goodness for Outlook, it can only get better.

agentx 05-05-2011 08:47 AM

@soho I feel your pain....
I have supported 100's of users on Entourage over the years as users had to use it for Exchange Server 2003/2007 etc. even with it's limited features and quirky configs ;-)
RIP Entourage !

dockerslund 05-08-2011 02:11 AM

OK, I've done what you recommended me to do.
So far, so good. It's still a bit slow sending though (sometimes up to 30 secs), but it's much better than before.
I'll let you know if the problem returns.
Thanks again for your help :)

agentx 05-09-2011 08:03 AM

I would just as a "test" change your DNS settings at Home to see if slow sending is related to this.

System Prefs > Network > Network Interface in Use (Airport /Ethernet)
Find the DNS tab in advanced settings for Airport and enter Google's DNS servers.
8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
See if this helps and maybe report back.

dockerslund 05-09-2011 07:04 PM

You...my friend...are a genius!
You've just solved the problem.
I'm not sending emails instantly for the first time in a very very very long time.
Thank you soooo much!!! :D

agentx 05-10-2011 07:27 AM

So not quite genius....;-) so we know the problem was related to DNS now.
So problem could be.....
1) Router not passing DNS servers to Mac correctly
2) ISP DNS servers are not very good
3) The Mac not resolving DNS correctly

Entering the manual DNS servers is a solution and using Google's DNS has helped.
However Google DNS is not for everyone, but as someone who is fully using Google it probably will not matter to you.

What you could also try is setting up a Network location "Home"
Now try entering your ISP DNS server address's manually and see if you have issues.
If you do then you know it is a ISP DNS issue not a router or Mac issue.

maybe report back and we can try to get to the bottom of problem.

dockerslund 05-11-2011 08:00 PM

SORRY! I obviously means 'I'm NOW sending emails instantly for the first time'.

I'll see if I can get a chance to do your suggestions during the weekend and I'll report back :)
