Safari Beta 2 (V73) can't save file? (prev. version could)

Here's problem:

Visit www.foxnews.com.
Open news article.
Try to save popup webpage.
Error: "Couldn't save document"

For example:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,84293,00.html

3 images in to top right column.

In earlier version, Safari would allow saving the popup window.

Apparently, Safari Beta v2 does not believe the popup window is valid data to save- ie. html or text and thus won't allow it to be saved. (That's my theory, anyway.)

Is this theory correct?

What is workaround to be able to save the popup webpage? (I want to save the image, and save the popup webpage also, because it contains the caption.)

So, you're telling me this didn't work (it did) or are you talking about something else?

Be specific.

schwartze 04-16-2003 01:03 PM

Are you trying to save the whole window or just the pic?

I was able to save the pic(s) without a problem. I did not try and save the page though.

Craig- As stated previously: "Try to save popup webpage." How much more specific can this be?

A Little Peaved! 04-16-2003 01:23 PM

schwartze- trying to save the popup webpage. yes, image saves OK.

Craig R. Arko 04-16-2003 01:41 PM

Have you filed a bug report with Apple?

schwartze 04-16-2003 01:41 PM

Okay -

I tried to save the pop-up in Safari and was not able to.

So... I tried IE. It saved the parent window.
So... I tried Camino. It saved the parent window.

So... I looked at the URL and the HTML (in IE and Camino cause there wasn't any in Safari). The URL for the pop-up is the same as the URL for the parent window.

My suggestion (for a workaround - remember you asked for a workaround, not a fix) is to take a snapshot of the open window and save that.

frankko 04-16-2003 02:03 PM

It's not that the popup has the same URL as the parent window, it's that the parent window is popping the window and dynamically writing the window's HTML via javascript. So there is no actual HTML page, per se.

In Camino, you can view source, and it'll show you the output. Viewing source in Safari shows nothing. (I'm not sure which one is "right". If javascript is involved, I think that viewing source should show the javascript source code, not the result of the code. I don't know. That's not really relevant to the discussion.)

I just wanted to clarify what was happening on the site, and second what schwartze said, that best workaround for Safari would be to take a screenshot. In Camino, I'd view source, then copy/paste/save it as an HTML file.

Or use Grab to get the image of just the window. Or use a different browser for that particular function. That's why there's more than one available. ;)

Any way, if somebody wants a function changed in a future rev. of Safari, remember to use that handy-dandy bug button in the upper right hand corner of the window and report/request it. That's what it's there for. :D

A Little Peaved! 04-16-2003 02:23 PM

frankko- thanks for info!

now I see... Safari beta v1 was "saving" empty files!!!

 D'OH!

P.S. But, checking out source from main page, it already contains the caption there. :)

A Little Peaved! 04-16-2003 02:26 PM

What bug to report?

If "View source", I think Safari should show HTML source for popup window.

If "Save", I think Safari should save HTML source for popup windown.

A Little Peaved! 04-16-2003 02:28 PM

Is there a way in Mac OS X to save screenshot of just the front window, instead of the full screen?

If you use Grab (which is in /Applications/Utilities) you can capture a selected region. It saves as a TIFF by default.

And this is what the bug report is for.

A Little Peaved! 04-16-2003 02:36 PM

The "Activity" window shows components of things that are loaded by Safari.

For the popup, it shows .css but no html source. I think it's probably a bug not to show html in this list.

Activity shows "about:blank" to represent the popup webpage's window. I think this is another bug.

We're not Apple. Tell them.

I surrender.

Folks,

Thanks for your helpful posts.

However, I KNOW how to send Safari bug reports to Apple, and have done so MANY, MANY times.

I am discussing these items here, and started the thread for lots of good reasons:

FIRST to confirm there was a bug, and

SECOND to identify what the exact problem was, and

THIRD to discuss what a good solution would be.

It's really NOT helpful for you to make bad assumptions, and it's rather annoying.

command-shift-4, then hit the spacebar. then hover the camera icon over the UI element of interest (it will highlight in the system select color). a click will snapshot that UI element.

An aside, shouldn't there be a </html> tag at the bottom of the source for proper markup. Can someone please confirm this or am I wrong?

I just checked and there was one when I checked the source.

frankko 04-16-2003 05:11 PM

One time I accidentally dragged 400 jpg files into the dock. I was trying to drop them onto the Debabelizer icon but I guess my hand slipped and every single one got added to the dock. When there are that many items in the dock, all you see is a gray line. I tried dragging the items out of the dock, but after about ten I gave up and just deleted the dock prefs. Apple needs to add an "Are you sure?" alert for cases like that.
