how long have you been a member?

I just realized that I have been a member of these forums for 7 years now, well maybe not exact but I joined in 2003....

You could go back to my first posts and then my most recent and see how much my knowledge has progressed over the last 7 years.

fazstp 01-19-2010 11:16 PM

I joined 2004 but didn't become more regular 'til a few years after that. If you look at my posts you'll see how much time I spend goofing off in the coat room :o.

raveen69 01-20-2010 12:11 AM

I joined back in 2007 which is a few months after I got my first Mac Book Pro ;)

AHunter3 01-20-2010 12:18 AM

2002. Just starting to use OS X a ittle bit back then. (I had the Public Beta and 10.0 but they weren't legitimately usable for everyday wear. Even 10.1, which I was using when I joined this board, wasn't a fit replacement for MacOS 9). Info-Mac Digest had disappeared and I wanted a place where I could ask questions and be part of a Mac-using virtual community.

Well you did post the most giant rubber ducky picture I have ever seen, that has to count for something!:D

edalzell 01-20-2010 11:24 AM

2002 for me.

crazy!

too busy to post/help out these days... perhaps not such a bad thing! ahaha

NovaScotian 01-20-2010 02:52 PM

Joined in October 2002, the year I retired and installed OS X 10.1. This site got me through that early learning curve.

I remember some old people that were a great resource here, like Merv, though I think he actually went on to work for Apple. If you work for Apple you aren't allowed to post on forums I don't think....that guy was pretty smart.

Then there was Voldenuit (sp?) and I think he was an old school Unix guy, but haven't seen him on here for long time. Haven't seen Carlos on here for a long time either...

This forum has a pretty good crowd though, and is one of the more mature forums I belong to.

Yeah Raven, another Canadian member if I recall. I thought I saw a post not too long ago where hockey had posted something. Maybe it was a thread I searched for and was reading through.

NovaScotian 01-20-2010 05:30 PM

MBHockey was not an "old" guy; when he first appeared in this forum he was in college. Voldenuit means vol de nuit = night flight.

mnewman 01-21-2010 05:11 PM

April 2002. I don't post much, but I read every day.

There's a whole little group of you Thailand guys too.

AHunter3 01-21-2010 05:16 PM

sao is still around but not as prolific as he used to be. He babysat me through my teething pains in Unix, coming in from an OS 9 world.

In my case, that was voldenuit (and as always for many of us, Cameron Hayne).

Anti 01-25-2010 01:04 AM

Wow, I've been a member for...3 years and one month? It's hard to think I've been here that long.

Irene 01-26-2010 10:17 AM

I joined in 2003 and have learned a great deal from this group. Years ago I had to pack up the heavy KayPro and take it to Users Group Meetings.

Jay Carr 01-26-2010 12:51 PM

I've been here since the dawn of time, but I made my presence known circa 2004, a date that shall surely be recalled for eons to come.

Anti 01-27-2010 01:35 AM

To expand on my post a bit, I joined like, RIGHT AFTER I got my first MacBook Pro (I had an aging G4 before that, though) and I really liked discussing Macs/Apple/things, but I was at a loss as to finding a good forum for this.

I found this place because back when I was first introduced to OS X in 2005 (I was an OS 8.6 holdout for a while), my friend told me that Mac OS X Hints was probably the best place to become a better power user of OS X. So, I found the forum link through there. Lurked a couple months, then finally joined in December 2006.

baryonyx 02-01-2010 05:59 PM

I've been a member ever since Rob took flight from the MacFixit forums back in the day and brought forth this site. As you can see I don't post much and I'm not sure I've posted for a number of years. But every now and then I wander by and take a look. Howdy!

G4Man 02-05-2010 08:29 AM

a long time...

I think I joined in 2001 or 2002. We had just made the jump to warp speed by purchasing a G4 tower to replace an old PowerMac running OS8.6. OS X was a strange new world, and a Mac IT bud suggested checking your site for tips on how to make this new-fangled UNIX-based OS work. I've been here ever since.

The G4 tower got retired just this year. It still runs, but 567 mhz doesn't buy what it used to. We found a 24" iMac on sale and made the upgrade. My Powerbook, purchased in 2004, continues to chug along with its replacement battery and upgunned 2 gigs RAM.

So it's been fun. Thanks for helping me keep the Macs functional..

tlarkin 02-05-2010 10:18 AM

I remember when I first saw OS X. I worked at a computer store in their service department and had to fix Macs in and out of warranty. In fact, I was not even a Mac person or user as I did not like the classic OS at all, but since our "mac guy" quit my boss made all of us learn Mac so there was never a "mac guy" anymore as we were all able to work on them.

I remember the nice Open GL dock, and was like well it looks pretty. When about 10.2 came out I started really getting into the Unix side of Mac. I was a lurker here, but ultimately joined. I have learned so much in the past 10 years working with Macs and this forum has definitely help a lot.

Well, 3 that do much posting. Maybe a few more lurkers? mnewman up in Korat, ThreeBKK in BKK and me down here in Songkhla. There must be more somewhere. I have recommended the site to quite a few people over the last few years, so maybe some are content to just read the latest news and views?

Yeah sorry I never actually counted, but if I had to guess I would say at least 5 of you?

Interesting. I haven't noticed anyone else, but, that said, not everyone publishes their location.

Jay Carr 02-09-2010 12:45 AM

I'd love to see a Google Analytics of this particular site. I wonder where we get the most hits from...

GavinBKK 02-09-2010 01:00 AM

My money would be on CONUS. Probably by a high %, too.

China most likely. Asia in general. They are quickly catching up to the Internet which means so many of them are now very interested in computers. Plus like 2/5 of the worlds population is in Asia.

But the vast majority of China doesn't speak an appreciable amount of English. Which isn't bad (not at all, I speak Japanese for example). But it does make them less likely to visit this particular forum. My personal bet would be the US and England neck and neck.

I can see your point, and yes it can be translated, but a couple of thoughts. Firstly, translations software is barely decent (last I checked), especially between Asiatic languages and English. With that in mind: Secondly, why go to a translated site (which could be a pain), when you can go to one that is in your native language just as easily?

All of that being said, I may be entirely wrong. That's why I'd love to see a Google Analytics of this site :). Maybe some happy moderator will fullfil my request... ???

PS -- Just a quick example from Asahi Shimbun. It's somewhat readable, but the structure of Japanese sentences makes it really hard for a computer to get a proper translation to English. At least at the moment... (I somehow imagine that will change.)
