Magic Mouse...

So what do people think?

Picked mine up today... and its pretty cool.... its nice to have the ability to scroll again (Mighty mouse got clogged ages ago) and the screen zooming feature is a must for anyone that does graphics or 3D...

Not sure where the Expose and Dashboard buttons vanished to...?!

NovaScotian 10-29-2009 04:17 PM

I just ordered one to replace my USB mouse.

styrafome 10-29-2009 04:36 PM

I was kind of interested in it, but realized I'd be a lot more interested in a USB Apple multi-touch trackpad for my Mac Pro. I want pinch and rotate gestures, and I don't think Magic Mouse does those. I'm also reading that the swipe is not easy to do while maintaining mouse position.

Let me know how it goes because I need a new mouse. The lack of those extra buttons is probably a plus for me because I usually only activate them by accident and that can get pretty annoying. I like the non-roller scroll idea. My stupid mighty mouse could only scroll up due to cloggage. I eventually abandoned it for an old MS optical mouse. Touch pad probably wouldn't be good for me. I've never really taken to them. I kind of like the idea of some sort of pen/tablet setup but don't really want to spend the money.

yeh... 24hrs later and its still great... buy one!

is it only wireless or is there a wired version? £55 is a lot for a mouse

Jay Carr 10-30-2009 09:00 AM

@kel101 -- It's only wireless.

me thinks that i will stick with my classic M$ mouse. I dont think i would ever need the swiping gesture and the zoom thing can be done anyways with the scroll wheel

benwiggy 10-30-2009 10:44 AM

Does it take batteries? I'd rather have stuff plugged into the computer.**

I've been using a Wacom Bamboo tablet, which I much prefer over any mouse.

**Though a little mouse I bought for my laptop has about 2m of cable. Why would I want something that far away from my computer!!!! And don't get me started on 8m USB leads. It took me ages to find a shop that would sell me a 1m lead.

edalzell 10-30-2009 11:04 AM

Do you have to lift up your left finger to right-click?

freelunch 10-30-2009 01:54 PM

I bought a wired Targus laptop optical mouse seven years ago for £7.95. Left and right buttons and a scroll wheel. It works so well I use it with my desktop Mac, too. £55 for a mouse? Nah.

I am waiting for Christmas... But think its pretty cool.

One thing gets me though: with all the move towards being "green" why no rechargeable base??? I'm sure Apple could come up with one sufficiently cool.... Maybe even an induction one like some that are being offered for gaming control pads. That is cool enough for Apple - ain't it?

This is what I use :)

Sorry to swear on here, but I found my initial wireless Might Mouse OK until the scroll wheel started to go down the route of all mighty mouse scroll wheels. After several months of taking the thing apart and cleaning, even that no longer worked, so I resorted to a MS Bluetooth Mouse 4000. It's superb I have to say.

Works with any input device which generates scroll up/down events. Any mouse, trackball or even a two finger scroll on a trackpad + control will do that, and has since (I think) 10.4. :)

I've still not played with one yet ("Local" Apple store was closed for refurbishment when I went past it last week.) Most important question for me is: can you middle click? If you can't, then I'll have to carry on nursing/cleaning my mighty mouse :(

tlarkin 11-01-2009 09:50 PM

I've never liked Apple mice, most likely won't like this one. I have tried every mouse they have ever put out for the last 10 years and have always used third party mice on my Macs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Caius raises a good point: Isn't this the same Universal Access screen zooming we've always had (Ctrl-scroll wheel on any mouse or Mac trackpad) that merely blows up the existing pixels, not a true zoom that you would be generated by an application itself? Kind of like the fake "digital zoom" in a camera?

If so, Apple keeps flogging it as a cool MacBook or Mighty/Magic Mouse feature when you can actually do it with any input device with a scroller on it.

exactly right, though not sure if it will integrate with graphic apps.

And I dread to think at how the new mouse handles gaming

There really isn't any other way to zoom. Otherwise you'd be asking the graphics card to rework pixel density in real time. That could be rather difficult.

But it would be sweet. Wouldn't it? :)

tlarkin 11-02-2009 01:45 PM

ctrl + scroll will zoom in with any mouse. I am using a MS mouse because I like the feel of it better.

In my humble opinion, Apple has always made terrible mice. I couldn't stand using the old hockey puck mice!

NovaScotian 11-02-2009 02:19 PM

I've now got my Magic Mouse up and running, and I do like it better than my USB Super Mouse. Only took a few minutes to get used to. You do have to download the new Mouse Preference Pane if your keyboard and mouse appear in the same pane (as they will if you'd been running USB keyboard and mouse). Now I can use the Super Mouse (which I liked well enough) on my MBP instead of the Logitech (I don't much like the trackpad).

The downside: if you use the USB Overdrive Preference Pane (which I did) you'll have to uninstall it to run your Magic Mouse. Otherwise, the scroll won't work. According to Montalcini's web site he just got his and will have a fix soon.

Just got my new iMac and Magic Mouse. I can scroll up and down by swiping my finger; but I cannot scroll right to left by swiping. Please help. Since I am used to a track pad, I find it horrible to have to move the mouse itself.

Also, while the keyboard batteries remain at 100%, after 2 days the Magic Mouse batteries are down to 87%.

Jay Carr 12-17-2009 02:10 AM

The Magic Mouse must might be faulty if it's acting like that. A couple of thoughts come to mind.

First off, make sure that you have the mouse set up properly in settings, inside of system preferences.

Secondly, if the batteries really are draining that quickly, call Apple Care, that's not quite normal.

Irene 12-20-2009 05:45 PM

After reading the reviews of the Bamboo Touch Pad, I am not inclined to buy. It's about $55 at Amazon, and people compare it unfavorably to the MacBook's Touch Pad which I love and want to emulate for my iMac. I think I'll get a trackball. I really don't like using a mouse including the bluetooth Magic Mouse which came with my brand new iMac. Wish there had been a trackball option!
.

anthlover 12-20-2009 10:32 PM

Perhaps apple should just create a desktop touch pad and be done with it. Perhaps both stand alone and integrated with a keyboard. I used to love optical trackballs with desktops. I'm good with optical mice.

*** Yet I have noticed that those rare times I sit with my macbook at a desk and try using anything but the trackpad below the keyboard I can not be bothered to make the extra hand travel. Sure if I was doing something specialized a drawing tablet or precise optical mouse might have an advantage, but I find the trackpad to be my preferred input method. I am one Gen back on my 2.2 Macbook, so I have not yet used for extended periods of time the new glass all trackpad click version, but I am sure I would feel the same.

Yes! you do still have to lift your left finger when right clicking. That is why i haven't bought one... It usually takes me 2 or 3 clicks to get a right click out.

I don't have to do this with better Touch Tool. Just click with your finger anywhere in the right of the mouse and right-click is recognised. I didn't have to lift my finger to right click.
