10.6 installed - LEXMARK X500 driver not recognised

Hi,

I installed Snow Leopard...
The lexmark x500 series driver from lexmark (the so called version 0.29.0.0) which worked for 10.5.8 is not recognised anymore by Snow Leopard because the old file formats for print drivers do not work anymore..

Has anyone experienced the same problem? And is there a solution?

Luc

As Snow Leopard is officially released tomorrow, it's unlikely. You will have got your copy because you are a registered Apple Developer, no doubt.

Can you be more specific about how "the old file formats for printer drivers do not work anymore"? Are you saying that PPD files are no longer used?
Please provide much more details about your setup and problem. Are you connected by Ethernet or USB to the printer?

lavida 08-27-2009 08:11 AM

the fileformat of the current driver is .ppd
the fileformats supported under 10.6 are (amongst others) ppd.gz
connected trough usb

appleman_design 08-27-2009 08:24 AM

10.6 should go out and look for a driver to work, it is up to the dev. to make there printers work w/ 10.6.

Great I just bought an HP computer which has problems with it ( the sound card due to Vista) ,and I was thinking of exchanging it for a MAC, now I am getting worried that I will have incompatibility issues.

This thread does not yet confirm a compatibility problem with the Lexmark X500 on Snow Leopard.

What other equipment do you have? You should of course check that any other hardware you have will be compatible with any new purchase.

.gz is a compression format. PostScript Printer Description files have been gzipped since Leopard 10.5.
Can you see the printer in the Printer Setup Utility?
Can you select the PPD for this printer?
If not, what happens?

(Hardware problems are also best served in the Hardware section of the forum, rather than OS X Experiences. Perhaps an admin will move the thread?)

Apple have now released a document listing printers that are compatible with Snow Leopard.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
The Lexmark X500 would not appear to be there. However, it remains to be seen whether you can get your drivers to work. If not you may want to try linuxprinting.org for a third-party solution.

Perhaps you could confirm whether your disk is a retail version of 10.6...?

I can see the printer driver in the list when I install the (older) macdriver from de lexmarksite. It is the so called 0.29.0.0 version.
However when I want to print he telles me that the software is not correctly installed.
I tried generic drivers, they don't work.
I can't find the printer on the apple compatability list.
However using the lexmarkx500.app, the printer is recognised as scanner and I can scan..! Acrobat professional recognises the printer as a scanner.. everything like before.
Printing however .. no way..

This printer is described as a "paperweight" on linuxprinting.org.

Yes. It's not there.

I suggest that your best hope of getting this working is by contacting Lexmark and urging them to produce an up-to-date driver.

All-in-one printer/scanner/fax combination devices are often difficult about drivers, and are often not as good as individual machines at each of their tasks. Jack of all trades, but master of jack.

10.6 installed - LEXMARK X500 driver not recognised

Greetings from germany... same thing here: installed brand new snow leopard, my X502 appears, installation works but... no print at all! Reads "falsch installiert, kontaktieren Sie den Hersteller". No chance to get over this...

hwatkins 08-29-2009 08:26 PM

I have the same issue with the same printer Lexmark x500n, the printer worked before the upgrade and since the printer is not on the Lexmark supported printer list I had to install the older driver 0.29.0.0. The driver installs but when I try to use it, I get an error stating the driver is not installed correctly.

Anyone have a resolution?

I had the same problem and found a fix elsewhere:

1) Open Terminal
2) Log in as root
3) copy and paste this command "chown -R root:admin /Library/Printers/Lexmark/LexmarkX500MFP"
4) Now enjoy again printing on x502n !!!

macguyincali 08-31-2009 02:50 PM

Add me to the list of people with (expensive) Lexmark x500n that is now completely non-functional after SL upgrade! Any thoughts, would be appreciated.

Does this help? Scanner working?

Hi,

I'd like to upgrade to 10.6 tomorrow and found this thread with a possible fix:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread....92073&tstart=0

Does this help? Does the printer AND scanner work afterwords?

Regards,
Muelchi

Yes, this is where I found the procedure: add to your account the root rights, then open the Terminal, log in as root (use command su and the password you defined) and finally paste the chown command (as stated in the thread) and the problem is solved !

But... I tried the printer only. I will let you know later for the scanner.

Muelchi1 09-01-2009 10:24 AM

Thanks!

I will myself install Snow Leopard tonight and hope the scanner works! Thanks for the help!

Muelchi1 09-01-2009 10:25 AM

Lexmark support told me that they are not planning to develop new drivers for this printer! Shame on you Lexmark!

Muelchi1 09-02-2009 02:48 PM

Scanner is not working for me. Does anybody have more luck with the Scanner of the x500n? Is there a log written where I can get a detailed message why the scanner is not recognized by image capture?

ThreeDee 09-02-2009 05:26 PM

Printer/scanner companies are being cheap and don't bother writing good printer drivers for Macs, nor do they use scanning standard protocols like TWAIN.They've been using their same old Carbon with their proprietary scanner interfaces for years.

It's unlikely you will get your scanner to work properly unless the printer manufacturer actually makes a decent 64-bit Cocoa Mac driver.

Also, student13, you shouldn't worry so much about small problems with computers. There are so many things that could happen that you could not possibly think of. Most printers already work fine with the Gutenprint drivers, which you can see in a huge list at http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_...d_Printers.php

solution for Lexmark x502n with snow leopard 10.6. on an ethernet network.

Go to System Prefs.

reset the printing system

1. Control-click or right-click a print queue in the "Printers" pane.
2. Choose "Reset printing system..." from the contextual menu.
3. Click "OK" in the "Are you sure..." confirmation sheet.

this will erase all your printers.

Install Lexmark_X500_Series_X-1.dmg [available at the lexmark website]

go to print & fax prefs in system preferences and add the lexmark printer as an IP printer with it's IP address. Protocol should be set to LPD. Address is the IP address. Queue is blank. Name is your choice. Print using the lexmark driver.

This worked for me. Amazing.
