Pictures of tweaks
 

Since I really like to see tweaks in action, I'll start with a few images of my own, involving themes, services, contextual menu items, pref panels and other goodies.

I'll let <http://acosx1.aboutcomp.com/~crarko/...s/tweaks1.html> kick things off.

Please post links to your tweaked OS X; or if you have something with a fairly small size JPEG (I use 800 x 600) I can host a small number of images for people (on my OS X Server). Email me if you need this.

I usually have oculus running, and constantly uploading a picture every 3 minutes to here:

If I ever figure out how (or someone wants to tell me how), I'll have a page with the last 3-5 pictures on it at once (have oculus cycle).

<Here's> a few shots of some of the new theme's going around. Swizcore's Be OSX and NeXT themes (the eTerm added via OroborOSX), and b00zo's Windows XP theme.

Most of the theme developers seem to congregate at MacNN, so look there for current links.

The windomaker.jpg is called 'secure_bsd', I don't remember where I got it.
If you are interested I can uploaded to File Sharing on the iDisk.

Great Themes, quite a clean and modern look. I know Swizcore from the macosx.com forum, his themes are always very well done.

Will make the rounds at MacNN, see what I find.
(Was there the last couple of days, but I only looked about Perl in some great posts by pmccann. They absorved all my attention, and still do.)

Whoa! Craig, how in the world did you get all those extra services into the service menu??

Maybe I missed a thread about this somewhere or something... Does OS X automatically do this? Are my applications not showing up in there because they're on an external HD and not in my Apps folder?

Mostly, I'm a VersionTracker junkie and find most of them through that source. :D

I'll try to put together a list of as many of the ones I've got and where they come from as I can remember.

Three keys to remember:

1) for an app to provide services (like SNAX) is has to be in a subdirectory of /Applications or /Developer/Applications;

2) you can get specialized services, they go in ~/Library/Services or possibly /Library/Services;

3) Only Cocoa apps (and BBEdit) can use services at this time.

I lot of the icons just came with various programs I've installed. Many others come from <iconfactory.com>, in the World of Aqua series, and I think Pogue has a link to the Pogue collection icons on the Missing Manuals site. Others come from all over, and I admit I don't keep track. Try searching Google for 'Mac OS X' and 'icon', I guess.

About the Services (from before).

Some of them are:

CalcService, WordService, SearchGoogle, Terminal Services, ShellService, and the others are provided by apps, like SNAX, X-Ray, CocoaSQL, and Omni-stuff.

All of these should be listed on <VersionTracker>.

PS - it's good to see <MacDesktops> back online.

So they are just folder/app. icons? Or Aliases? They are just so small.

Yup, when the dock is reduced to its smallest size at 1152 X 870 resolution, the icons get pretty small. A little magnification makes them quite usable, though.

New to OSX , 1st desktop set-up pic
 

I've only have had OSX for a week and am already pretty well set-up and running smoothly. I was dreading the new world from OS9 but have had a ball switching over and am in awe of the shear power of X. Thanks to all the posters here my learning curve has been fun. Thought the veterans might get a kick from my first result:

Here's mine...

I like to keep my Dock clean and simple. The old style apple is actually a folder full of aliases to all my important apps. Happy viewing.

Hey Craig were did you get that stuffit Contextual menu item.

Hmm, can't really show a picture of my tweaks, but I can describe them:

Force Verbose Booting- A nice option to force verbose booting at the startup without having to hold option-v. If you're making modifications to the kernel that happen at bootime this can be useful if you have a really short term memory and forget to hold down option-v... (available at http://slagheap.net/etherspoof/)

Etherspoof- The kernel no longer meticulously sticks the hardware address in the ethernet headers. This allows applications to inject packets with fake MAC addresses if they so choose. (available at http://slagheap.net/etherspoof/)

TCP Timestamp Randomly Seeded- If you've ever used hping, there is a neat little option that can try and guess the uptime of a remote host by looking at the timestamp of packets. This tells the kernel to seed the initial timestamp randomly. This was a pretty trivial change, if you want the patch just drop me an email.

Random PID- When fork()ing, instead of increasing the PID for the child process by one, randomly assign a PID. Slightly non-trivial change and it doesn't always work (sometimes computer just won't boot and debugging it is hard because I don't have another Mac OS X machine...), if anyone wants to debug my code, again, just email me for the patch. :-)

Increased amount of BPFs- Haven't actually used it, but someone once asked how they increased the amount of BPFs so I found the option in the kernel configuration file (./xnu/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_PPC/bsd/conf/MASTER for those interested) and increased the number then rebuilt/rebooted to verify that it indeed did work.
