Everything seems to be slllooowwwing down

It there some way to do a maintenance check or something on a mac?
It seems my MBP has really slowed down in the last 2 months. Anytime I click on anything I get a beach ball for about 10 seconds before it actually does what I want it to do. This happens right after restart.
Is there a way to rev up my MBP??

cwtnospam 05-06-2009 09:13 AM

Open Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities) and check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive. Is it verified?

What is the SMART status? I don't see an option to check that.

Interesting, my MBP is slowing down too, so I check the S.M.A.R.T. status and the partition map scheme is GUID Partition Table versus the Apple Partition Map in the picture above...

Partiton map doesn't matter what does smart status say?

It says it is verified. Thanks for the screen shot!
What now?
:o

Now we look at disk usage vs size, how much RAM do you have, how many apps do you keep open, what loads at login ("Login Items"), and what Activity Monitor says about your active processes.

Kaisermo 05-06-2009 05:40 PM

Capacity : 111.5 GB (119,690,149,888 Bytes)
Available : 23.0 GB (24,649,285,632 Bytes)
Used : 88.5 GB (95,040,864,256 Bytes)

I have a Intel Core 2 with 3 GB of ram
I really don't keep a lot of apps open. I run lightroom and word a lot but that is about it.
With 4 G's of ram...I should not be experiencing this.
Is there some sort of disc clean up or something i could do to make it faster?

hayne 05-06-2009 05:51 PM

I'd recommend doing two things (we're still at the diagnosis stage, looking for info about the problem, not yet trying to fix it):

1) Try logging in as a different user (preferably freshly created and not customized at all) to see if the problem occurs there. (Use the "Accounts" preferences panel to create a new user account.)

2) Use the "Console" application to look in the logs to see if there are any relevant messages around the time of the problem. ("Console" is under /Applications/Utilities)

How are things when you're not using Word?

I have everything closed and it is a little faster, but not like it should be!

cwtnospam 05-06-2009 06:56 PM

What about Hayne's advice? Is it better when logged in as some one else? Anything in the Console?

How about Activity (/Applications/Utilities) Monitor? Do you have a lot of page outs?

Kaisermo 05-07-2009 07:56 AM

This is what my console says this morning.
I have to cut this in half because it is so long. It started about 6:02 I think. This is only just about 10 percent that was listed.

I don't have a lot of page outs. I think it said 125k or something.

Hmm. Have you tried uninstalling the Wacom driver? Do you have the most up-to-date version?

This is going to sound stupid, but how do I uninstall it?
Also, I am trying to get an icon off of the bar near the clock. I don't use that program and I was wondering if that was my problem.

benwiggy 05-07-2009 02:56 PM

I have a Wacom Bamboo Tablet, and I have an app called "Remove Tablet" in the Applications/Pen Tablet folder.

Thanks benwiggy. I removed it.
Now I have the above message in my console.

Anyone have any idea how to remove the WD Anywhere backup button from the tool bar on the top of the screen???

Kaisermo 05-08-2009 05:04 PM

Can anyone tell me if it is normal to have such messages in the console?
Can anyone tel me how to remove icons from the top menu bar?

I don't know about such messages, but that specific message isn't particularly normal, no. I'd strongly suggest removing the very very bad HP (Hewlett-Packard) software that you've installed. Is that a driver for an all-in-one printer that includes a scanner?

Hold down the Command key and drag it off the top menu bar? But I assume that you're still talking about the WD Anywhere backup button? Removing it from the top menu bar is not the problem--you need to remove the WD Anywhere software from your computer (and stop installing unwanted and unneeded software that comes with your hard drives and scanners in the future).

First, look in System Preferences > Accounts > your account > Login Items tab, and highlight any stupid software that you see there, including anything by Western Digital, Wacom, or HP. With it selected, click the minus button near the bottom of the list to stop it from automatically starting. (Unchecking the box next to it does nothing at all--don't even worry about whether it's checked or not--remove it from the list.)

If the unwanted software isn't listed there, then you have to remove it manually. Start by checking in /Library/StartupItems for folders with the name of the company for which you want to remove the software. If you see unwanted stuff there, delete the entire folder, and restart your computer.

You never did answer about what happens when logged in as another user.

Yes this is a driver for the all in one printer.

I did remove the WD Anywhere from my computer a couple of weeks ago but I can't get rid of that icon on top.

Trevor
I deleted all start up things there. Computer starts faster now.
I am still getting error messages in the console.

cwtnospam You never did answer about what happens when logged in as another user.
Sorry about that cwtnospan. I am currently using a new user account.
I have posted that error message from the console on that account.
I am not sure what I am looking for in this user account.

Is it still slow in the other account?

No not as much. Is that because not everything is loaded on this user account as much as the other?
I still have that message in the console.

Do I NOT need to have any HP stuff on here? How does the computer know to print to the printer without the software? I have it hooked up wireless through a router.

It's probably a combination of the HP* stuff, which gets loaded for all users, and something else in your original account.

*HP software is amazingly bad.

I uninstalled all HP stuff.
I also have a brother printer on my Mac.
It is very testy. I installed that software also. I do have an icon on the top tray for the brother printer. How do I remove that and the WD Anywhere icon? When I look for applications I don't find anything to delete. It is almost as if they are stuck up there.
I think this computer is running a bit better.
I have a feeling that I might have A LOT on here that I might not need.
Do you have any suggestions as to how I know what I need and what I don't need as far as software goes?
Also, if anyone can tell me how to get rid of the icons in the menu bar that would be great!

cosmcrazy 05-09-2009 09:09 PM

The icons in the menu bar can be removed by command dragging them off. Either that or option, control etc.

cwtnospam 05-09-2009 09:22 PM

Of course, removing them from the menu bar doesn't mean that the software isn't running.
