Can't drag mp3 to Mac iTunes - "do not have enough access privileges"
A few months ago I moved to a new MacBook Pro running Leopard and copied over my iTunes library. I haven't really messed with it since then, but yesterday a friend sent me some mp3s of his band and when I attempted to drag them into iTunes I got the message "Attempting to copy to the disk [name] failed. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation. iTunes could not save to your Music Folder because you do not have write access. Check the permissions on your Music Folder and folders in your Music Folder, then try copying this file again."

I checked permissions - I am shown as owner with read/write privileges for the nested folders Music, iTunes and iTunes Music. Also owner for the new mp3s.

I ran DiskWarrior (replaced directory, but it was fine), and repaired permissions - no effect.

Per a suggestion elsewhere, in Terminal I did sudo chown -R bob on the Music folder (which I think is supposed to recurse to nested directories - via the -R?). No effect.

In the Finder I can create folders inside iTunes Music and copy files to them. I just can't import files into iTunes.

I posted this problem on iLounge with no luck. Here's a link to that thread, which includes some of the things that've been tried:

Help!

Please launch the "Terminal" application (under /Applications/Utilities) and copy & paste the following commands (all together), press Return, then copy & paste the results back here so we can see:

id
ls -ledO ~/Music
ls -leO ~/Music/iTunes
echo "done"

Those permissions look fine and match what I see on my Mac (10.5.6) except that my "iTunes Music" folder has an '@' shown at the end of the permissions, which indicates that it has some "extended attributes". And using 'xattr' on that folder shows that the extended attribute is of type "com.apple.FinderInfo".
But I don't know if that is important, nor how to change it.

Another thing to check is the logs - using the "Console" application (in the Utilities folder) look at the system and console logs to see if there are any messages at the time when you try to import these mp3 files.

And maybe try importing some different mp3 files (e.g. ones that you copied & renamed from your existing iTunes Music sub-folders to the Desktop. (just as a test to see if the problem might be related to the particular mp3 files you are trying to import)

No messages in either of the log files.

I wasn't able to copy an mp3 to the desktop and drag it back to iTunes - iTunes thinks it's the same file even though the file name has changed - guess it's looking at the ID tags - so it doesn't re-import.

But, I found an MP3 karaoke file my wife downloaded that wasn't in iTunes (it was in another folder in Music) and I imported that file successfully to iTunes. Then I dragged one of the problem files to this other folder, then tried importing from there - same error. So clearly something is different about these files. Though the permissions read the same on both.

Now, this karaoke file came over from the old Mac along with the rest of my Music folder, so it makes sense that it lives in the same universe and gets along with the iTunes folders.

On the old machine my user name was "Bob", as it is on the new machine. I didn't do any migration assistant anything - just dragged over the stuff I wanted to move. So far it hasn't bitten me in any other way, but perhaps this is the exception?

Haven't yet tried importing/ripping from a CD.

So clearly something is different about these files. Though the permissions read the same on both.
Maybe if you showed us lots of info (results of all the commands you can think of) on the troublesome files, something might give us a clue.

Commands to get info on those files:

ls -ledO name_of_the_folder_where_those_files_are
ls -leO name_of_the_file
file name_of_the_file
hexdump -C name_of_the_file | head -n 15

Here we go:

First the folder:

ls -ledO Molasses_Final_Mixes_as_MP3
drwxr-xr-x@ 13 bob staff - 442 Jan 30 18:14 Molasses_Final_Mixes_as_MP3

Now a problem file:

ls -leO Crosstown_Molasses.mp3
-rw-r--rw-@ 1 bob staff - 2557827 Jan 30 13:14 Crosstown_Molasses.mp3
(note I changed "Everyone" to rw in hopes it would fix the problem - didn't)

Is there more/different info I can provide?

Or perhaps I need to reinstall iTunes and reimport all my music?

Also I still have the user account on my old machine. Pretty sure the music is still there, and I haven't changed much since moving to the new machine. Perhaps I can re-copy using some other method - Migration Assistant (if it lets me do just iTunes, or just the Music folder - never used it so I don't know).

Whatever you suggest - I'll try it :)

I don't know what the problem is.
One last idea is to use a program like "Audacity" and load the troublesome MP3 files into it and then export as some other format and then import that other format to iTunes.

Since I also had trouble with an MP3 I pulled off an FTP site, it makes me think the problem is iTunes, not the file. Somehow it's happy with all the files currently "in it", but doesn't like new files.

I used Audacity to save a file as .wav - got the same message trying to import.

Guess I'll try Apple support...thanks for trying :)

Ahhh - found it:

Navigate to the music folder on your account and Get Info. Click the little gear symbol and make sure that Read and Write access is applied to ALL enclosed folders.

(from the Apple forums)

Apparently there was something in there with incorrect permissions, even though to the naked eye all appeared well. Forcing all nested items to read/write for my account seems to have fixed it.

Whew!

Hi, I have the same problem with a new MB with OS 10.5.8; I checked the read/write music permissions for itunes. I copied all my music from my old ibook and is playing fine in the MB, but the problem arises when I download music from Limewire, getting the same privilege error message mentioned.
With the old ibook I used to download music from Limewire without problem.
Im going to try to do the same in the music folder of my account as my friend here found out.
By the way Ive been a switcher to mac since a couple of years and just started in this forum after facing some problems with Macs.
