I just noticed that a new button has mysteriously arrived in my toolbar without my doing anything. I just opened up my Eudora 5.1b20 for OS X today and there it was. It looks like a magnifying glass with the word, "WEB" over the top of it. And when I put my cursor over it to see what it says it is, it tells me it is 'Search with Lycos'. Its position is to the far right. So, there are now twelve buttons by default.

Anybody else notice this or know anything about its unasked for arrival?

BTW, I still only have a generic icon for the 'Print' button in the toolbar. I was never able to figure out how to fix that one. It is next to the new Lycos one. Although only a minor cosmetic issue, any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA.

I noticed this as well. In fact, I saw when it "appeared." Eudora first created a new button on my button bar, then came the info, which is a link to search using Lycos.

It's the price we pay for using Ad-ware. Fine with me. It survived only 30 seconds on my computer, as I did a Command-Click on it and put it out of its misery. :)

Geez! I didn't know they could do that. I thought that the ad window was all that would change from their server. I know it's Ad-Ware but that is annoying enough on its own. Especially the way it continually pops back to the top when I want it to stay down low.

I wonder what other things they could do to customize the app to their needs and not necessarily ours? Now if they could just fix my generic Print button icon.... but I won't be holding my breath.

And since I don't use Lycos, I may get rid of this latest infiltration as you did, Phil. Or could it be customized to have, say, Google instead? :p

Speaking of 5.1b20, I can't get html pages to appear. I always get broken image icons.

Read about a fix for 5.1b18, (paste <x-eudora-setting:298> into a new message, click on the link and type Y in the box. I did that, and have display html selected, but still cannot see html pages.

Is there something else I need to do?

Thanks.

Sounds like you did it right with the pasting into a new message and then entering a "y" in the dialog box that comes up after you click on the link.

But you may also want to check your Eudora Preference settings, Fonts & Display, and select all the check boxes for Display Options, then quit Eudora and launch it again.

The message you are viewing must have graphics in it and they may firstly appear as broken icons but should eventually turn into images within a few seconds.

If that doesn't work, you may try logging out and then back in or next a full restart of your computer. But I don't think that should be necessary.

Also, are you the administrator account on your system? You may have to be in order to get the setting to stick but I'm not certain of that.

Please let us know if that gets you going or not. Good luck!

Well, I did everything you suggested above.

1. Made the changes as I detailed.
2. Checked all my settings.
3. Logged out, then logged in.
4. Did a complete restart.
5. Trashed Eudora and all accompanying files.
6. Downloaded fresh version.
7. Made appropriate settings.

But, still no html images.

Attached images do show, but I still get the broken image icon in html messages, and I've left the open message on the screen for five minutes waiting for the images to "fix" themselves.

There must be something I'm doing wrong. I've tried Eudora on three different machines:
1. Powerbook Ti
2. iBook
3. G4

And the results are always the same....broken html images.

If all you folks can see html images, then there must be some basic step I am overlooking.

BTW - Is there a way to change the headers so that I can use Eudora to post my own html messages?

thanks.

There are a few others that have had the same problem and it seems no one can figure out why. Check out the google newsgroup for Eudora Mac at:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=comp.mail.eudora.mac&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wg

There are some threads about this you could post into there. Maybe someone will come up with something.

From my reading there, the only other suggestion that I found is to copy and paste in that X setting because of possible misspellings or font issues that could be occurring. (It looks like you've done it right though)

Also, are you running OS 10.1.2? Apparently, some different things happen with different versions of the OS. Some report to have the problem in one but not the other without any rhyme or reason to it.

The fact that you have this problem on three different Macs could suggest that there is something common to all of them, like the OS, third party software or some installed card or peripheral. Perhaps that is a clue to figuring this out. Investigate all the possibilities.

If you can't solve this, please send a bug report to Qualcomm. On the Eudora web site where you download the beta is where you can find the link to submit.

If you want to see an html message with graphics use the Eudora File menu item "Open in Browser."

I have no idea what happened, but now html images show up perfectly.

As they say, "If it's working, don't fix it."

thanks for all your help.
