I've spent the last couple days fighting this problem and I can't figure out what is happening. I did a fresh install of 10.5, with the option of erasing before installing. After doing so when the system booted up the usual default desktop picture was missing (just the blue background) and the dock was missing. So I reinstalled again, same results. Then I figured maybe there was some firmware upgrade along the way that was preventing 10.5 from working properly. So I did all the updates, now running 10.5.5. Same results, no desktop picture, no dock. I booted into single user mode and did an 'fsck -fy', everything checked out ok. I'm currently booted into safe mode and having Disk Utility check things out (not done yet). One interesting thing, in safe mode the desktop picture shows up, still no dock.
