I want to use Mail on my mac but I dont know what type of service it is(POP, IMAP, or Exchange) and I dont know what the incoming mail server is. How do I get this information? (I use optimum)

You need to get info about your email account from your ISP.
Most ISPs provide POP accounts.

Alright, as far as I know Optimum supports POP. It might support IMAP or others, but here's what I know about POP:
Incoming Mail Server: mail.optonline.net
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.optonline.net
Hope this helped ;)

none of the outgoing (SMTP) mail servers that I tried worked.

smtp.mail.optonline.net
mail.optonline.net
smtp.optonline.net
mail.optonline.com

It is quite common nowadays for ISPs to prevent use of any other SMTP server than their own (often called "port 25 blocking"). Check with your ISP to see if they do this.
If your ISP is blocking port 25 except for their own SMTP servers, then you will need to use your ISP's SMTP servers for sending mail.
An alternative might be to use mail over SSL - this goes over a different port. But your email provider would have to support this - not all of them do.

I figured it out. for some reason it was using port 587 instead of 25.
