View Full Version : diskutil - hidden disks?

05-22-2008, 08:19 PM

I was formatting my drive and found under - diskutil list - in Terminal,
that I had 4 other disks that I was not aware of.

When I go back in disk utility, I have only
1 - 55.9GB ATA disk
1 - mounted volume (disk)- that is not partitionned (I don't have access to partition controls)

But when I get info of the disk, partition number is 3??

I have erased 3 times the disk - OS extended with 7 pass erase
And the 4 other disks still show in Terminal

Tried diskutil mergePartitions but won't work - these are no partitions but seperate disks...

I would like to restore my disk, remoove all these other disks (partitions?)

*Mac OS9 drivers option is not available when I try erasing the entire disk...

Need help

thank you

Let me guess... You have a 60GB drive. The reported 55.9GB is the base 2 calculation which calculates to 55.9 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 = 60022167961.6 or 60GB in Base 10.

There is nothing unusual about the additional partitions on your drive. The first would be the partition map itself. There are a number of functions that small invisible partitions are used for. They take very little space and are necessary. Don't worry about them.

BTW: The 4 additional disks when you're booted from a CD are RAM-Disks used for temporary files.

Thank you Las Vegas,
There's nothing like a good answer.

Mac OS9 drivers option is not available when I try erasing the entire disk...
In theory, the drivers are available only when erasing an entire disk, not when erasing just a partition....
Shouln't I see the checkbox when erasing the drive?
