View Full Version : Can RAM be "purged?"

I think there was a tool like this for OS 9...
I have a "not enuff memory" situation here despite killing all the apps that I can, in order to show a client an illustration. I have another process right now which oughtn't be too RAM-intensive which I need for another client.
But what it feels like to me, is those other, now-killed apps are still "hanging onto" the RAM they had been using. I hate to personify things, but I don't know how else to describe it.
be great if there were something I could do to make all that RAM which is SUPPOSED to be free to actually BE free, and therefore available to preview that illustration.
Thanks!

What OS are you running, 9? In OS X, every app gets all the RAM it needs, all the time.
I wish you'd be more specific about your "not enuff memory" [sic] situation. What makes you think you don't have enough memory?

Yeah - please tell us the symptoms, not your interpretation of them.
Show us (verbatim) whatever error messages you get.
Tell us what you see/hear. Tell us what Activity Monitor is saying.
Tell us what the problem is - is something not working at all? (e.g. app refuses to launch) or is something being slower than usual - or what?

OK..fair enough..
I was unable to preview an illustration in Adobe Illustrator. I could see my art in wireframe only; not the actual strokes and fills.
So, I probably jumped the gun on the memory theory; I was able to gather the parts of that illustration from other iterations, and get 'er back together, so my latest wacky theory is that it was a corrupt file.
the exact warning it was throwing was: "can't finish previewing"
In my experience, that warning is oft associated with memory issues...such as not enough to show the artwork.
thanks!

1) How much free disk space do you have ?
2) Does the problem happen when you log in as a different user? (Create a new user account via Accounts preferences if you only have the one user.)

I have appx 392 GB of free space on the boot volume...Have not tried the new user angle, but I'm pretty sure that the file in question was damaged.
thank you!
