Ti Book G4/500 10.2

periodically the dock reverts back to its default settings including it's position and the icons that are in it. any ideas as to why this would be happening?

Could be a bad dock preference file. It's in home/Library/Preferences and it's called:
com.apple.dock.plist

Try throwing it out, logging out and back in again.
