Hi,

I'm looking to dump Firefox, but I really miss these two functionalities in Safari:

1. URL auto-complete. type the (domain) name and press Ctrl/Cmd + Enter to add "www." and ".com". I even looked for plugins, but found nothing.

2. Search through address bar. Like if I type "what time is it?", Firefox would search google, but safari displays a 404.

1. Safari does this automatically as long as your ISP's DNS servers aren't hijacking "no such name" errors, like Verizon does. (ISPs need to stop doing this crap.)

2. If you're in the URL field already, just hit tab and then type.

Eh, I already knew that.

But I need it support Cmd or Ctrl + Enter for URL auto-complete and search through ADDRESS bar, like Firefox. Not possible?

Update: okay, Found #2 - Keywurl. Still need help with #1 (URL autocomplete)

#1 autocomplete URLs works in Safari, but not FireFox (but I don't have any extensions installed for FireFox)

Check out Safaristand. Among many other great features, it will let you search using multiple sites and engines in the address bar.

I don't understand your confusion. Autocomplete is and always has been a part of Safari. Type 'hp' and hit return and you get 'http://www.hp.com'

Thats a DNS based solution, unlike firefox, that programatically adds www. .com to the name on pressing ctrl+enter.

And - which is 'better'?

Does SafariStand help you?

Oh, OK, hard to tell....
So, assuming someone knows nothing about DNS, what makes the DNS solution better, Or, to ask in another way, what makes the FireFox programmed result better?

Well, (1) Its slower, pings the DNS server to check if the URL exists and (2) it doesn't work using openDNS, as in my case.

Sweet! - Thanks for the concise answer!
So (with Safari apparently not too satisfactory for you) - Why would you want to dump FireFox?

Mainly because it isn't Mac native. Keyboards keys ("Enter" for new line, "Tab" etc..), among other things, stop working ocassionally until I restart. Its also less responsive than Safari etc..

Just curious, does Safari offer the kind of wide variety of extensions available to Firefox? I've been a Firefox user for a few years so I naturally carried it over to Mac when I got my first Mac computer two years ago. Extensions like AdBlock and FlashBlock are essential to me. Are similar add-ons available for Safari?

Nope, but it does support main/major features like mouse gestures, ad blocking, debugging etc... And I'm planning to use CSSEdit as (a powerful) alternative to Firebug.
