View Full Version : More Ram?

I have a PowerBook G4, 1.5 GHz with 512 MB Ram and Leopard. I was thinking of putting the max allowed ram (1.2 GB) in the machine to cure or the minor lag I have been experiencing. The problem is when I look at the Activity monitor it indicates very little paging out. I have been using it for about three hours and I see the following in Activity monitor.

Free: 87.05 MB
Wired:78.76 MB
Active: 294.95 MB
Inactive: 50.26 MB
Used 424.93 MB

VM Size: 27.7GB
Page ins: 214.68 MB
Page outs: 101.40MB
Swap Used: 291.94MB

Based on what is seen above can someone please advise me whether more RAM would make a difference. I'm wondering if the slight lag I am experiencing is just due to the latest and greatest running on something a bit dated.

More memory does sound like a very good idea for you, and based on your virtual memory usage and page outs, should help decrease the slowdowns you are experiencing.

Is your PowerBook the 12" version? If it is, then you're right, it will only fit 1.25 GB of memory. But if it's the 15" or the 17", then it can fit up to 2 GB of memory.

Especially running Leopard. Go for more RAM unless you plan to upgrade to a newer machine soon.
