Hi,

After trying Hackintosh on my PC for a while, I finally ordered an iMac 24" (2.4ghz). I've a few questions about it:

1. Is there any way to sync iMac with my Vista PC so I can have files/folders on both the systems?

2. iMac comes with 1GB, would it be worth upgrading to 2GB? I usually have Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Firefox, IE and some explorer windows open all the time.

3. Do iMac's have sensors like the macbooks?

4. Do iMacs have any LEDs/glow to be able to see the keyboard/mouse at night?

Thanks

ahem, one more:

6. Apple reseller here quoted me approx $250 for 1GB RAM. Is there any other/cheaper brands that would work with my new iMac 24"?

Thanks

I don't know about the rest, but here's where I purchased Ram for my MacBook Pro at a great savings.

1) You could share the Mac's/Vista pc's Hard drive over a network between the two, so you could open/save files to the other computers hard drive.

2) Maybe, open all the apps you normally use, then click on the hard drive icon on the desktop, then go to Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor, then click the icon on the dock (bar/shelf on bottom of screen) that appears, then click on the 'System Memory' tab if the chart displays that your memory is mostly/completely used, buy more RAM, if there is plenty of unused RAM, you needn't buy more RAM as it wont help.

3) If you are meaning the motion sensors, I don't think that there are any.

4) No, they only have a 'Caps Lock' light, but thats tiny, and the light built into the computer below the display which pulses when it is in sleep mode (standby).
However you could buy a small desk lamp/USB light to light up the keyboard.

6) Yes, I agree with alateer that Crucial RAM is a good idea, I think they use memory from the same company that supply Apple, but Crucial RAM is a lot cheaper, at US $25.99 for 1GB (http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=iMac%202.4GHz%20Intel%20Core%202%20Duo%20%2824-inch%29).

1. You can share folders and then use any number of applications to sync the folders. Here's an Applescript I use to do that from the Mac:

tell application "Finder"
set x to choose folder
set y to choose folder
set FolderA to (the quoted form of POSIX path of x)
set FolderB to (the quoted form of POSIX path of y)
set com1 to "rsync -aEu " & FolderA & " " & FolderB
set com2 to "rsync -aEu " & FolderB & " " & FolderA
do shell script com1
delay 1
do shell script com1
do shell script com2
open x
open y
end tell

2. Photoshop loves RAM 1GB may be ok, but 2 would definitely be better. Use Safari, Firefox, Opera, Camino, iCab, or Shiira. Don't use IE.

3. Yes, it comes with the remote for Front Row.

4. I don't think so.

Why this, CWT?

do shell script com1
delay 1
do shell script com1

Because the Finder doesn't always get updated after an rsync. The files are there, but the Finder doesn't see them.
By doing the first one a second time, the Finder gets refreshed. It doesn't add much time to the process, since rsync just sees that it's all there and closes.

Edit:
By the way, this doesn't happen if it's just a few files. When the amount to be transferred gets above a certain point, it seems that the Finder "forgets" about rsync. Relaunching the Finder refreshes it too, but this seemed a better solution. ;)

Welcome to the Mac!

4. Do iMacs have any LEDs/glow to be able to see the keyboard/mouse at night? No, but you can buy glowing keyboards from other companies that will work on the Mac. There are also the flexible USB lights, which are cheaper but not as effective.

I agree with others that 2GB of RAM is good, particularly for Photoshop. Crucial gets recommended a lot here, and another vender called OWC is mentioned a lot. I use OWC and like them.
