Hey there.
I have a file that has a .mpg ending. I can't seem to import this into iMovie. Do I need to convert this somehow? If so, then how do convert it and with what?
Thanks so much

Hi, can you view the file in Quicktime Player? If not, the file may not be supported by iMovie, which uses QuickTime to read video files.
You may be able to use the Perian (http://www.perian.org/) codec to enable QuickTime to open up dozens of other video formats. Make sure you quit iMovie and other QuickTime apps, install Perian, and see if QT player will open it. If it does, iMovie should be able to import it.

If you can view it in QT player, iMovie *should* be able to import it. Does an error popup? Or does it just not allow you to drop it in or select it at all?
If you need to, you can use a program like QTAmateur (http://www.mikeash.com/?page=software/qtamateur/) to convert it into another QT-compatible format. Try exporting it into a DV Stream. Although it retains the quality the best, this format will take up a good amount of space.

It does not give me an option to select it.
Should I change the format then?

Try DropDV, http://www.dropdv.com/. I've found it to work on some otherwise intractable MPGs that have come from still cameras used in "movie mode."

give MpegStreamclip a try. She's hard to beat. Drop the file in the app and choose export to QuickTime. Select dv/dvcpro NTSC. This should work fine in iMovie.
