I've been telling people how rock solid OSX in general is but ever since the 10.2.3 update I've been having my first batch of problems since I first installed it two years ago.

My Finder crashes when trying to load certain web pages. They seem to be connected to Javascript pages but I can't be certain. It happens with any browser (Chimera, IE, Omniweb). Most sites w/ java work but a couple in particular cause my entire system to crash. I get a spinning beachball icon and it never quits, can't force-quit, dock doesn't work, clock stops. . . I'm forced to do a hard reboot.

I've read similar kernal crashes w/ other users throughout the forum directly related to the 10.2.3 update but none occur in this fashion. Any ideas? Here is my crash log. . .

A kernal panic should give you a message and a button to click to reset.

But your loginwindow is crashing and I assume you have autologin enabled (so it would look like a finder crash).

Anyway I've heard that the latest java developer version beta 1.4? is buggy.
What do you get for a version of your java.
[dreamersound:~] williamt% java -version
java version "1.3.1"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1-root_1.3.1_020714-12:46)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.3.1_03-69, mixed mode)

For the loginwindow thing you might try trashing /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
I don't know if this will cause the loginwindow to put up a list or not so have your password handy.

ps I know what they say about assume. And maybe I assume too much.

Willy--Well, i tried a variety of things. The java version I'm using is "1.3.1", I trashed the login prefs, tried different login configs, even booted up in single-user mode and ran "fsck" but it reported all was well. The problem also occurs when I log in as a different user so it's system-wide.

I'm just confused why such a crash would occur while accessing a web page? Especially when the crash log reports a crash in the loginwindow. I didn't know that process was even running well after I've already logged in.

My machine doesn't have any problems any other time except when I'm surfing the web and occasionally hit a web site that locks it up good. It'll happen each time with the flagged web sites but I can't find a common link between the ones that lock it up. I thought it was a java thing but know it seems some sites not using java are locking it up too. I've never encountered any problem that a force-quit wouldn't even work.

I'm pretty much at a loss. Any knowledge on how to downgrade back to 10.2.2? Didn't have ANY problems until after 10.2.3.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and help out with my problem. . .

Could you provide some URLs for others to try? I'm never had a crash due to java from a website yet in 10.2.3...

Here are some of the URLs that are causing me to lock up.

http://www.aatfcu.org/hb/
http://www.mandy.com/1/jobs3.cfm?v=3679566

that's all I can remember right now.

I don't think it's related to java anymore although it's not ruled out yet. Many java sites work just fine. I haven't been able to find common links between the sites that are causing me to crash.

I'd say I've got pretty advanced troubleshooting skills on the Mac but this one is really leaving me dumbfounded.

Tried the links with Mozilla. And no probs here.
LoginWindow has to stay running for you to be logged in. If you look for it with top or Process Viewer then you can kill it or Quit it and you will be logged out very quickly. When it crashes things act the same way. Some of your old process are probably still hanging around too. So a reboot would clean those up. Or this in the Terminal to kill all of a users processes.su - username -c 'kill -9 -1' I use this when having probs with XDarwin and need to clean up stuck logins to XFree86. I quit everything else first. Then shoot myself and log back in.

I have a Reason to never be Grumpy
