View Full Version : Is it possible to install the OS9 disk drivers w/o reformatting??

Okay, here's my problem... I recently decided to wipe out my system and reinstall OSX. Standard scenario, I wasn't too familiar w/the way things worked and wanted to start fresh.

I have 2 hard drives, a 120gb and a 40gb. The 120 is used solely for my data, no programs or system files aside from backup iterations. The 40gb is for system files and applications and has two partitions, one for OSX, and one for 9.2.2 (not the 9.2.2 packaged w/OSX, but the system i was using prior to upgrading to OSX).

So, after making all of the necessary preparations to my data drive (including backing up my 9.2.2 partition to the 120gb), I started up from the OSX cd and opened disk utility. I left the 120gb untouched and erased the 40gb, and then configured the two system partitions.

This is where I screwed up. :o

I used the same configuration as before for the two partitions: OSX > 32gb; 9.2.2 >8gb. Only this time I made the mistake of unchecking the "Install Mac OS 9 Disk Drivers" option for my OSX partition.

I guess I was confused by the caption below it which ends with "This option does not affect Classic", and thought that there was no reason to have them on my OSX partition. Of course I was smart enough to format my 9.2.2 partition *with* the OS9 disk drivers installed.

Installation went fine, and I didn't realize how I'd screwed myself until now, three weeks later with OSX running super-clean and totally satisfied with the system's performance.

Last week I had to set the startup disk to my 9.2.2 drive in order to use a video capture device which does not yet have X drivers. All went well booting and I got everything done in 9.2.2 w/o a hitch.

Then I went to the "Startup Disk" control panel only to find that my OSX disk is no where in site. Then I noticed that I hadn't seen it on the desktop either.

A brief but intense moment of panic followed as I rebooted with the option key firmly pressed, followed by a sigh of relief as my OSX disk showed up in the list.

I immediately realized why this had happend and made a few exclamatory interjections to myself as I will be needing to boot 9.2.2 quite often in the coming months for a project that will require more video capture.

Luckily I can work around this problem with the option key at startup, but it is becoming more and more of an annoyance since this adds a good deal of time to bootup and I have to remember to change my startup disk back to OSX each time.

So unless someone knows of a way that I can install the OS9 disk drivers w/o reformatting my 40gb, I only see one other way of fixing the problem, but I'm not sure this alternative is feasible either.

Assuming that my only option is to reformat, can anyone tell me if the following method will not work:

- Backup all the files from my OSX and 9.2.2 partitions to my 120gb.

- Boot from the OSX cd and reformat the 40gb identically to its current state, but this time WITH the OS 9 disk drivers on both partitions.

- Install 10.2.0 on the OSX parition.

- Copy over my backed up 9.2.2 to the OS 9 partition, set startup disk to 9.2.2, and reboot.

- Finally, in 9.2.2 erase the contents of the now visible OSX partition w/the fresh 10.2.0 and then copy over my backed up 10.2.3 system from the 120gb.

Please tell me why this won't work, as I'm sure there are things I am not aware of having a very limited/novice understanding of UNIX.

Thanks! :D
