Now there’s an interesting prospect for Apple: acquiring their own network! Especially one that leaves AT&T’s badly misnamed "Edge" behind in the dust...

Perhaps not likely, according to Business Week (http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/sep2007/tc20070910_014733.htm?chan=top+news_top+news+index_top+story). It is, however, certainly an interesting thought to entertain.

Thoughts?

it doesn't surprise me... Apple have a history of wanting to control every part of the process... but sometimes.. that can be its downfall.

Lets hope it turns out to be more of an 'iPod' than an 'AppleTV' :D

It must be quite a dilemma ;) ; Apple would no longer have a carrier company to "gouge" for a share of traffic income -- a brilliant business model that must be making the CEOs of Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson green with envy.

They certainly don’t get any recurring income from their cell phones.

AT&T’s badly misnamed "Edge"

It doesn't necessarily mean it's the leading edge... :D

Without a massive i/s investment, they could only piggyback, but who knows...

i dont think its smart for them to do that, it'll be worse than having it only on at&t, apple could also make the phone a lot harder to unlock if it was on their on service, while this is "good" for them, sales will decrease dramatically
