Hello,
Im new to Mac OS X. That said, I have a blue and white G3. It originally came with OS 8.5. I upgraded it to 8.6. Now I want to put OS X on it. So I went an bought 10.2( Jaguar I guess?). Now i tried to install Illutrator 10, it doesnt load. So i guess i need to get 9.2? How does this work with older programs and drivers. I just intalled the software for my new printer, an HP 1220, and it still doesnt print. I cant install my software for my scanner or zip drive or CD burner. When i get OS 9.2 will all this be fixed. Will I have to switch back and forth between OS's. Please someone reassure me that this will work, i have never had so many problems with a macintosh product. I guess they are trying to make everyone not run OS 9. What if I have Dreamweaver 3 and Photoshop 7, do I have to switch back and forth from OS's. This is very confusing.

You'll need at least 9.2 (currently 9.2.2) to be able to run Classic mode which enables you to be booted to OS X and run most pre-OS X applications.

You ought to be able to install Illustrator 10 without any pre-OS X operating system installed...that is unless you are doing an upgrade, but then the upgrade disc will only want to find your older version of Illlustrator. But I'm guessing if your most recent OS was 8.6, you are running Illustrator 7 or 8 (or maybe earlier) and the uprgrade might not work for versions that old. What version of Illustrator have you been using?

How does this work with older programs and drivers?

Many (but not all) older programs work just fine running in Classic mode. For the ones that don't you have two choices: get the OS X version or reboot into 9.2 to run them.

I just installed the software for my new printer, an HP 1220, and it still doesnt print.

HP claims that there are drivers for the 1220 included in 10.2, you might want to see if they have been updated at their support page (http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpm35002.html)

I cant install my software for my scanner or zip drive or CD burner.

Is the scanner software for OS X? If not, you'll need to get the OS X version or run your scanner in Classic or booted to 9.2. Or you can get VueScan (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=7610&db=mac) ($40) which works for many scanners (see the list (http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#supported)).

What kind of Zip do you have? USB? It should work ok as is. SCSI? You might need some OS X driver for your SCSI board, what kind is it?

When i get OS 9.2 will all this be fixed.

Some but not all, as I alluded to before, it seems you've not done any upgrades in some time and you have some catching up to do to get things working smoothly.

Will I have to switch back and forth between OS's.

See above re: Classic and booting to OS 9.

Please someone reassure me that this will work, i have never had so many problems with a macintosh product.

Yes, you can get it all to work just fine. I too run a b&w G3 (a 350 mhz unit) and have been running OS X since the public beta days. I run Photoshop, Illustrator and other running apps constantly. I've got my scanner, CD burner and multiple printers working just fine with it.

I guess they are trying to make everyone not run OS 9.

Only in the same sense that Ford is trying to make people not drive Model-T's anymore.

:)

What if I have Dreamweaver 3 and Photoshop 7, do I have to switch back and forth from OS's.

Seeing how Dreamweaver is all the way up to version 6 now, I'll bet that v3 won't run so well in Classic. It ought to run OK when you are booted to OS 9 but if you use it extensively, it would be worth it to upgrade if possible.

Very good, thorough reply, rusto! :)

For those struggling with printer driver problems, I'd also suggest gimp-print-4.2.5 You can obtain a copy at http://www.versiontracker.com/ I was able to print with a couple of older printers after installing this and it even handled my HP 930 very well (not as many options as the HP driver, however). Let's hear it for the Unix base of OS X on this one.

One other consideration is that OS X sometimes has a problem detecting Classic if it's not installed before OS X.

Dreamweaver 6 hasn't been released yet, since the previous version was 4 that means that Dreamweaver MX is version 5.

ok, thanks for showing me, that doesn't make any sense that they go from 4 to 6, I still use 4.

By the way what is that eject icon for on the menu bar next to the clock, how do you get it?

/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Eject.menu

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. I was tied up.

Yeah that eject menu is helpful. I use that to eject my media so I don't eject everything using the keyboard. It comes included with Jaguar. Look for eject.menu
