It sucks because it blows away SMS, email and many other settings and configurations.

i had the same feeling. they got everybody hyped up for ichat and picture messaging and email upgrades and then the update fixes a bug particularly the safari bug.

Downloaded the update, no problems at all, quick and painless, but very dissapointed. So much hype about the first update and they left all the important thing out. As mclaren said, I believe it is a Safari update, which IMHO if it is a security update I’m happy with it, but at least Apple should list on their website exactly what it is that we are updating.

yes i think they should do that to. like right down what the next update will contain so i dont get hyped up over a bug fix.

Maybe basing expectations on rumors isn't such a hot idea after all.

What! ... really? You think?
There's a few very-well-paid market analysts who haven't yet learned that.
And to make my post at least slightly useful, here's a link to exactly what is in the iPhone 1.0.1 update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306173

Thanks for the link, as suspected, the update only took care of the security issues with safari. :)

From the page describing the iPhone bug fixes:
WebKit
CVE-ID: CVE-2007-3742
Available for: iPhone v1.0
Impact: Look-alike characters in a URL could be used to masquerade a website
Description: The International Domain Name (IDN) support and Unicode fonts embedded in Safari could be used to create a URL which contains look-alike characters. These could be used in a malicious web site to direct the user to a spoofed site that visually appears to be a legitimate domain. This update addresses the issue by through an improved domain name validity check.
This is surprisingly similar to a bug (CVE-ID CAN-2005-0234) which affected Safari 1.x and was fixed back in early 2005. (See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301061 for details).
Since they have known about the issue with similar-looking Unicode characters since early 2005, allowing the bug to get into a new product is (more than) a bit sloppy in my book....
