Hi, I'm not sure if this issue has been visited before, but my question is that whether its' possible to configure xfree86. i'm using 4.2.0 w/ wmaker on a powerbook G4 (old version, non-radeon chip, don't recall what exactly it is =P), however the window is updating very slow. I actually encountered this problem for a while, since xfree first came out, however I couldn't figure out a way to configure the xserver.

for instance, if i have a 400 x 600 xterm and i move it to a new location, you can see it repainting the new xterm from top to bottom, it's REAL slow. just like it's not using hardware acceleration at all.

is anybody else experiecing the smae problems? and would anyone give me some pointers on what i should do to fix it?

thanks!!

Did you installed XFree86 4.2 and windomaker through Fink?

I don't experience slow movements, in fact my installation runs quite fast, but I checked in the archives and some people do experience similar problem as you.

Take a look:

<<You may have started using a different terminal application, though. I've used Xterm, gnome-terminal, and aterm here, and noticed that aterm is significantly faster than the other two. However, gnome-terminal is a much better terminal emulator than the other two, so I'm putting up with its slow painting.>>

<<Yep, there is no HW acceleration, but I also noticed a tremendous mprovement with the latest xfree86-rootless and windowmaker (currently testing 0.80.0). Even window shading works virtually smoothly now (on a PB G3 Lombard). Still, you certainly cannot expect any complex animations to run even nearly as fast as in "native" Quartz mode. >>

Cheers...

ah good call, i should have tried rootless mode actually. yeah it runs LOTS faster in rootless. thanks for your advice =)

still, seeing the desktop icons and Apple titel bar doens't look as cool as fullscreen though. I really wish there will be improvement in fullscreen mode. =(

thanks
