The iPhone is WiFi capable, meaning you can use the internet for free or without service on the phone. So, would it be possible to use a free phone service (such as AIM Phoneline) on it? The only trick is that you would have to be able to make calls from the internet because the iPhone doesn't support any software. Is there any service out there that someone can give me the name of?

Thanks,

I like your idea =))))) I was hoping to see Skype or Gizmo on iPhone. Currently I don't know any voip's that are Ajax based, except half-not google talk which needs support of a full app still in the background.

Finger's crossed we'll see iWork '07, iLife '07, and iChat 4 coming to Mac AND iPhone =))))) and iChat 4 with Jingle support in jabber than we'll be able to hood up voip through gtalk2voip.

That won't happen for a while because I am sure that the exclusive deal that Apple has with AT&T prevents stuff like that.

well, if this (http://mac.blorge.com/2007/06/13/the-tawdry-truth-about-the-iphone-wifi-and-edge/) is true, then your dream could not be further away from reality; at least for the near future.
Carriers will try to make money out of the iPhone, not let you save it....

I am sure it won't be long until someone finds a hack to the locking system. There are plenty of business in the grey market already promissing unlocked iPhones. we'll have to wait and see.

I guess I should've post here instead of opening a new thread, but there are services online like jajah.com (http://www.jajah.com) that give basically free calls between users. I can get calls to my iPhone from any user, but for some strange reason I can't start the call from the browser in the iPhone. I was hoping for someone here to try it by himself and let me know the results... or if you guys know of a similar service.

Java isn't in Safari on the iPhone, and when I turn it off on my Mac, Jajah doesn't work.

Actually, if you go to http://mobile.jajah.com/ there's no problem with Java. I don't think there's free calls between users but still it's dirty cheap to calls outside the US.
