Make Spotlight Wait For Return

Can you make Spotlight wait 'til you hit return instead of searching as soon as you type a char in?

That's part of the design of Spotlight, so your search is complete as you type.
That's at least partially fixed with later versions of 10.4, so perhaps you just need to update your system for improvement in searching. If not, try copying your entire search term. Open the Spotlight menu or window, and paste the search word or phrase so it gets everything at once. You'll find that very quick.

You can use a program like LaserLight to type in your search string. It then sends the whole string to Spotlight.

You can also preselect the kind of file you are searching for (image, PDF etc) and a date range.
