Check if you can access web sites via their IP addresses instead of hostnames. If IP addresses work then you have a DNS problem and may have to enter the DNS servers for your ISP in the Network Preferences.

E.g. instead of trying http://www.apple.com
try: http://17.254.0.91

Are there any other computers wirelessly connected to that router that can successfully access web pages?

Please launch the "Terminal" application (under /Applications/Utilities) and copy & paste the following commands, press Return, then copy & paste the results back here so we can see:

ping -c 3 17.254.0.91
ipconfig getpacket en1
echo "done"

So how is your PC connected to the Internet?
(It'd be best to show us a rough diagram of how your whole home network is set up, what connects to what)

Yes - if you can't figure any other way to do it.
(e.g. copy & paste to a text file, then transferring that text file to your PC, emailing it, etc)
By the way, does email work on your MacBook?

And what is the Belkin wireless router attached to?

Please show us a diagram with all of your computers and networking devices (modems, routers, etc) and what is connected to what.

i am having the same problem with the belkin adapter and my wife's mac os x 4. It connects to network, but no internet. could it be due to the fact i am using a 128 bit encryption?

You aren't doing well well in communicating the details. Please use many more words - explain things in twice as much detail as you think you should need - and then add double that!

You say that your Belkin router is connected to a phone line.
Do you mean that this router is doing dialup?
What we need to know is how is this router connecting to your ISP.
Normally if you have a DSL connection, then all access to your ISP goes through the DSL modem.
If you have more than one computer, then usually you need to buy a router and connect that to your DSL modem and then connect your computers to your router. Unfortunately that requires that your DSL modem have an Ethernet connection, not USB.

1) you speak of a Belkin adaptor. The original poster has a Belkin router, not an adaptor. Maybe that's what you meant?

2) If you suspect a problem with encryption, try turning it off temporarily as a test.

I have just seen this problem at a neighbors.
They have a macbook and a Belkin ADSL wireless/ethernet router with VOIP.
So the Belkin is connecting to the internet using ADSL and making it available through wireless and a 4 port wired ethernet switch. It does DHCP etc.
I connect to the router through ethernet (wired) and configure the belkin, MAC address registered in "Wireless" "Access", WPA turned on, a secret string assigned etc.
Unplug the macbook from ethernet and turn on wireless; macbook says
it is connected to the wireless network but can't get an IP through DHCP. Comes ip in the "169.xxx" network. Even if I give it a sensible IP (10.1.1.5) manually it can't ping or connect to the belkin.
If I do a "netstat -rn" when it's actually working I see the MAC address of the router filled in in one of the routes. It doesn't get filled in when things aren't working through wireless.
My iBook seems to connect perfectly to the Belkin (but so did the Macbook at first) so the Belkin's wireless works. But the macbook connects perfectly to my Airport express. What is causing the failure between the Belkin and the macbook?

Maybe the Belkin is configured such that DHCP is not available via the wireless network? Or maybe it is just broken.

This seems like exactly the same problem I had with my new MacbookPro connecting through my Dlink DWL-2100AP. I would get a DHCP address and could connect to all machines on my local LAN, but I couldn't get past my ISP's dns servers. My wife's iMac G5 connects through this same router with no problems.

After a day's worth of trial and error, I discovered that the Dlink router has an option for a "Multimedia QoS" setting. I turned this off and... lo and behold, I can now connect out to the internet with no issue.

You may want to check and see if your Belkin router has some setting like this.

Good luck!
