View Full Version : another g5 smu problem?

Hi there - I have an iMac g5, second gen, OS X 10.4.7 (8J135,) Darwin 8.7.0, 13 months old (one month out of warranty) and its begun 'switching off' randomly.

this happens at no particular time or condition, usually at least 4 times a day.

the syptoms sound exactly like the well publicised smu/pmu faliures across 1st gen iMac G5s, but after discussions with mac I have been assured my computer is not one of the ones effected, i.e not eligible for any extension program.

I have searched through my logs but find nothing obvious, altho I dont really know what i'm looking at most of the time. also ran a memtest - clean. No attatched peripherals other than keyboard, mouse & DSL modem, no new 3rd party software that i'm aware of.

to replace power supply/managment hardware in new zealand i'm looking at $800 min, so any ideas before I cough up?

addit: I've gone through the troubleshoot list here on osxhints, bar a 'clean slate,' or sending it to apple.

also threw in a UPS in case my power was dirty.

still powers down :(
