Macbook Pro Lock up from Sleep

I've noticed that whenever i close my macbook pro and let it sit for a few hours, more often than not when i go top open it back up, the mouse is responsive - but none of the apps are responsive, and none of the quick keys work either. I end up hard rebooting. Any ideas ?
