View Full Version : How do you start your day?

(I posted this on another forum, but thought it might get us going on something here as well).

Every morning I approach my computer running OS X, eager to start the day's work. I set my cup of coffee down on my desk, click the mouse to wake up the display, then gaze in appreciation at the beautiful user interface beckoning to me to get started on things. 'Tis not only a workhorse, but a veritable work of art looking back at me, and I, so undeserving, actually have the privilege of using this technological wonder to do my most insignificant work. My heart fills with appreciation for Apple's marvelous achievement--the power of Unix married, at last, to the simplicity and elegance of Macintosh! The destinies of these two great computing traditions have become fulfilled in a synergistic embrace which radiates creative energy from the display into my heart and my ajna chakra. Wiping a tear of gratitude from my eyes, I say the only sensible thing a rational being can say in such a glorious moment: "What's up, Dock?"

Now, how do you start your day?

"Ah, hell, it's morning already."

Then come and check the boards for anything interesting while the coffee perks.

I need some of your poetry about this stuff, Phil. :D

In non-poetic terms...

clean my 10 week old baby's backside before catching a bus (which goes 2 stops, I'm lazy)... grab a coffee from Costa Coffee (and it does costa)... run up to my 3rd floor studio (couriers hate me)... smack the Apple or Alt key (I'm I the only one who is still paranoid that wacking a letter on the keyboard during sleep will does something nasty to whatever app is open!)... relax, and do what Phil said!;)

two fingers of bourbon and a pop-tart

::chuckles::

Wake up at about 2 in the afternoon, grab a quick shower and brush the teeth. Get some orange juice and two Strawberry and Creme Cheese Toaster Studels (THE BEST!) and then sit down in front of my lovely little eMac, hitting the 'space bar' to wake it from sleep. I then check my usual message boards (This being the main one I ask questions on, seeing as everyone here is actually FRIENDLY and willing to help!) and my mail and then finally launch Project Builder and Interface Builder and work away until about 5 or 6 in the morning...

::repeat::

Gee, thought I read this somewhere before, Phil. :)

I get up around 5:30 a.m., hit the shower, dress for work (shorts and a t-shirt in summer, jeans and a polo or sweatshirt otherwise), make my lunch, empty and refill the ice trays so my wife doesn't run out during the day, fetch and flush distributed.net work packets on both my G4 and P4, kiss the sleeping kidders and slumbering wife, and it's off to work I go.

(Once at work I check email, check out things over you-know-where, then take my morning stroll through campus to Pantera to get my everything bagel for breakfast, grab a copy of the DI and head back to the office.)

:D

Thanks for stopping by, G! :)

FWIW, I meant my "What's up Dock?" to be a joke, finding it such an inane remark after all that flowery stuff that came before.

Glad to be learning a little more about a few of you and how you start your day.

Backing up to an hour or so before sitting at my computer, it's yoga stretches, coffee, meditation, and a short walk. Only then am I ready to face the world!

Pee the dogs, brew the coffee. I have only once attempted to brew the dogs. Morning came too soon, that day.
Dress, hop in the car. Hop out of the car, run back in to get coffee. Hop in the car. Hop out of the car to open gate. Hop in the car. Hop out of the car to run back into the house, pour coffee for wife and bring it to her bedside. Check the child. A little peck on the nose of each dog. Hop into the car. Hop out of the car. Back into the house to grab car keys. Pause breifly to note my dogs' comical expression. Stare back a minute.
"What?"
"You're a loser, but we love you."
"THank you. YOu've been most helpful."

Hop back into the car. Hop back out of the car, Grab lunch, back pack, thermos (full). Look around for anything I might have missed. Glance at dogs.
"Don't even say it."
Hop into the car. Connect ipod. Drive 1 hour.
Race into building. Hit bathroom.
Get to desk.
Boot up Ti, wake up server. Check email. Drink coffee.
Sigh loudly.

Routine's changed a bit since we've moved, but...

Get up and stagger off to work. Get to work, turn off the alarm for the floor, open the service door for the UPS guy, wonder why I still keep getting blueberry muffins from the corner.

Plop down on the desk and BOOT my mac. Yes BOOT. If I leave it on overnight, sleeping, I can count on a hard freeze in the morning. Yes I'm running X. I had hoped Jaguar or the latest update might help with this, but no dice. I suspect it's sleep (and classic) related because my little Earth Globe in the corner has the sun position where I had it when I left work (which unfortunately is too often after dark).

So I boot, and wait...

Tim,

Could it be heat related? I leave my G4 on overnight usually (running OS 9.2 mostly--sorry...) and usually if I get up and it is frozen either the air hasn't been on, or the door to the "computer room" was left shut and the window wasn't open. Now that the weather has cooled off outside, and I've been leaving the window in that room (in the basement) open, the lock-ups have stopped.

stagger out of bed anywhere between 7am and 11am (depending on when i have class and if im going to class). Hit the mouse to wake my dual450. glance at the dock to see if there are any new IM's or mail. Check to see if there is milk for cereal, if there is eat some. Then depending on the time and my level of lazyness drive or walk 15 min to work (both take the same time cause i have to try to find a parking spot which after 8am is next to impossible on campus).

Get into the office and make sure the computer lab is still there. read the usual assortment of web pages and check email again. figure out what i have to do for work and class that day.

aahhhhh the life of a student employee

I'm up at 7:45 most days, then off to breakfast at 8:30 and class at 9. Done with class at 2:30, then I have to work or go to various band practices. The rest of the day is spent on my iMac, or doing homework. (Always, always with some music playing. )

That's my day in a nutshell.

Alarm goes off at 6:00am. I lie in bed listening to NPR for about 30 min, then shower, dress, and run off to the lab. Get to the lab between 7 an 7:30 depending on how much I lolly-gag and how bad traffic is. Brew my first cup of coffee (mmmmm. sumatra. mmmmm). Check out the Macnn News page, check out OS X Hints, then read the ASAP (as soon as publishable) updates for the major chemistry journals (JACS, JOC, Org. Lett.) as well as check out Tet and Tet. Lett. Brew my second cup of coffee (I have a 1-cup coffe maker).

Then I cruise over to Academic360.com to see if any new faculty positions have been posted.

On mondays, I then organize the next batch of application packages to be sent to the various universities and colleges.

I don't seem to be getting a whole lot of real chemistry done these days....

I get up real early out of habit. I work for a Federal agency but live out here on Saipan. It used to be that our East Coast mainframes shut down around 9:00 PM Baltimore time which means around Noon here on Saipan, so getting to work before dawn was always an essential.

I wake up around 3:30 AM and immediately head for the old 7500 which is still my main machine. (I've got X on a wireless iBook for family use.) I wake it up (it's on 24/7 'cause it controls the house lighting) and reheat a cup of yesterday's coffee while the e-mail and daily-read web pages are loading up.

I spend about an hour with the 7500 while I wake up and my 53 year old joints loosen up. By 4:30 AM it's time for my five mile run after which I wake up the kid (11 year old girl who now spends hours communicating with classmates via IM), make breakfast and drive off to work.

The drive to work is awfully pleasant; usually done just at sunrise with a view of the Saipan lagoon almost the whole way.

At work I'm saddled with a gaggle of PII's running NT 4.0. At least we have a 512K connection which beats the less-than-reliable dial-up at home.

And, based on the International Date Line and my early hours, I bet my day begins way before yours....
