View Full Version : Weird black boxes in XDarwin

I finally managed to get Fink to compile and install KDE. This is no mean feat for me since I'm basically an idiot when it comes to programming and what not, and on top of that Fink has only recently fixed a bug which caused a build-lock error on the international English version of KDE (UK British).
All is working pretty well, but for a weird bug which happens whenever XDarwin is hidden and then switched back to visible. Black boxes of various sizes randomly draw themselves all over the desktop, and they multiply! The bug continues to get worse over time, every time XDarwin is made the frontmost application a new box appears, and eventually the CPU load makes using the machine impossibly slow, and I have to quit XDarwin.
Anyone know of a fix / workaround other than just not hiding XDarwin?
Here's two screen grabs, one of normal and one of (F10) Exposé show all windows.
Thanks in advance.

You forgot to tell us what version of OS X you have.
And are you using Apple's version of X11? Your reference to "XDarwin" makes me think that maybe you aren't. You should use Apple's version of X11 instead of the version from Fink etc. Apple's X11 is on the Tiger DVD. For Panther, you can download Apple's X11 from the Apple web site.

I'm using the recommended X environment for running KDE, xorg's XDarwin. I tried using Apple's X11 as the windowing system for KDE once before and it just doesn't work, even though some people (who know what they are doing, unlike me) reported that they managed to get it to work but with much tinkering.
I like XDarwin because it can run KDE rootless, which means (as you can see in the screenshots) you can have the KDE tool bar "within" OS X, without having to have KDE obscure the Mac desktop.
I'm running a fully up-to-date Tiger and both KDE and XDarwin where compiled with the latest Apple developer tools.

I'm using the recommended X environment for running KDE, xorg's XDarwin. I tried using Apple's X11 and it hated it, big time.
I'm not sure what there is to hate in an X11 server.
Probably you are referring to the default window manager that comes with Apple's X11. It is the window manager that determines the look and feel. You aren't forced to use Apple's window manager just because you are using their X11 server. See the X11 FAQ that is a sticky thread at the top of this forum section for info on running other window managers.

To be honest with you I had no idea the two where not one in the same until you pointed it out. I had hoped that someone would see my posting who had seen the problem before and could inform me of a work around.
I've read so many articles which have gone way above my head in the last week or so, just trying to get this fixed. I am left with an overall (perhaps entirely incorrect) opinion from this that for the hobby of tinkering with Fink XDarwin is the preffered X windowing system, but like I say I'm not the sharpest tool in the box and am open to ideas on how to rid myself (and my poor Mac) of the black box bug.
Thanks for the link, I'll read it.

Regarding buildlock errors, they are almost always easily solvable by you once you pay close attention to the actual error message and search the fink mailing lists. Here's a
guide to fink buildlocks (http://wiki.opendarwin.org/index.php/Fink:buildlocks) that includes a troubleshooting section:

I actually chatted in an IRC channel with someone who knows a lot about KDE on Mac OS X and the particular issue I was experiencing was a genuine problem and not just a regular build-lock failure, which as you rightly point out are usually fixable just by reading the Fink FAQ's and so on.
