do you let the cron scripts run (they run at 3 am ish)?

have you started up off your install DVD and run disk utility fully...?

or run the Apple hardware test disk on a loop for a few hours... make sure the isn't a hardware problem?

How many fonts do you have installed?

do you save stuff all over your desktop?

do you have any 3rd party plugins, hacks or mods to your OS?

Is the slowness only at startup & shutdown or at other times?
What does Activity Monitor tell you about what is taking the CPU and memory?
Are you low on free disk space?

You should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions:
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ (see the "My Mac needs help" section)

In particular, be sure to try logging in as a different user to see if the problem exists there. (Create a new user via the Accounts preference panel if you only have the one user account so far.)

Also be sure to do "Repair Disk" (different from "Repair Disk Permissions"!) in Disk Utility when booted from the Install CD/DVD. I.e. you restart from the Install CD/DVD, then run the version of Disk Utility that is available from one of the menus there.
See this Apple doc:

do you save stuff all over your desktop?
i do, but i dont have all icons, i use folders on my desktop to store them. but i have like 10 Gigs on the desktop, so that could do it. As for free disk space, i have used 1/2 of the 250Gigs
