Startup Items folder - security settings

I just upgraded my G5 from Panther to Tiger. I'm suddenly seeing a message that i've never seen before - not even on my wife's G4: 'The Startup Items folder ("/Library/StartupItems/") does not have the proper security settings.' This comes up every time i reboot after installing a program that launches a startupitem. The requester only has an option to 'fix' or 'decide later'. Obviously, if i don't 'fix', it'll continue to nag me every startup - not really an option. It seems as though the vague 'security settings' means permissions. Is changing permissions of the startupitem liable to break my apps?

I think this is merely a security improvement in OS X whereby StartupItems (which always run as 'root') must be in folders that normal (non-root) users cannot modify. (Otherwise an unprivileged user could modify it and thereby gain privileges he/she isn't supposed to have.)

I think it therefore should be quite safe to allow the system to "fix" the permissions on the StartupItems.
