Alternatives to Stuffit?

One thing that pops up to annoy me every so often is the Stuffit
Expander program. It seems out of place in MacOS, as a non-Apple
non-Free application. When there is an update, it leads me to their
site, trying to get me to upgrade, requring a username/password to
complete the download -- which includes other nag-ware.

Is there any other program that will let me get rid of "Stuffit"
completely? I'm not crazy about the way it works even when it's
not nagging me. I would prefer something like WinZip, where it
shows me the contents of the archive and lets me selectively extract
files to a location of my choice.

Does this bother anyone else?

Stuffit Expander is a necessary evil if you want to open .sit or .sitx compressed files but it is also a free evil. Download it again http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html (unless you have already paid for the upgrade), it requires no authentication to complete the download but does require authentication for installation.

As of today, Stuffit no longer has any good reason to exist, it does nothing more or better than the on-board zipping of OS X.

Educate your fellow users, that way it will vanish sooner.

I've seen less bugs under my 80W fluoro tubes on a summers night..... expander seems to work OK, but Stuffit Deluxe - do not go there.....

If you are contemplating registering it (and I agree, it does little else over on board zipping), join and read the user forums on the site first - not a good ad for their current product - trust me, I registered it last week.... :mad: :mad:

It can compress jpgs now, but only by up to 30-odd %, and SSSLLOOOWWWW...... I thought it would be good to compress my Pictures folder so I could make a DL-DVD backup, but the jpeg compression I calculated would take about 72 hours...... :eek:

I believe its archive encryption is strong, if it worked.... mine doesn't.... I'll stick to encrypted .dmg's.....
