compress quartz pdf files?

Is there any way to compress the pdf files that are generated from the print dialog? That is, generate smaller pdf files of comparable quality? Not counting adobe acrobat. I was hoping perhaps that ghostscript or imagemagick would provide a way, but, looking at the documentation, I did not find one. There is an app called pdfcompress on vt, but I have not been able to get it to work. Any help would be, as always, greatly appreciated.

There are a couple of pdf tools over at gnu-darwin.org. You might have to search a little, but I've seen them. These should all be binaries, so no problems with compiling them.
