how about an option for iTunes that would stick the usual audio controls (play/pause, stop, skip forward/back, etc.) directly in the menubar, so that they are accessible from any application? i think it'd be cool... if somebody wants to throw some code together and make one, i'd definitely be interested. right now, i'm using iTunes Remote, which is good... but i think it'd be more elegant in the menubar.

Some of those commands are available throught the dock icon once iTunes is running. (Click and hold, or right-click.)

You can also try X-Tunes, I find it's more elegant even than the menubar.

Tried X-Tunes. Didn't find it too useful (although graphics was pretty cool) and it doesn't seem to have an uninstaller.

I know this is an old thread brought up recently, but I think Synergy (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod_itunes/synergy.html) might be what you're looking for.
A second (probably better) choice I found is ByteController (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod_itunes/bytecontroller.html).
You Control: itunes (http://www.yousoftware.com/itunes/) is a good one too and it's free. You can see every artist in your music library as well. It doesn't download album artwork :( Still a favorite of mine though

You can also control click on the itunes icon in the dock, same as clicking and holding, or right clicking.

I am also going to recomend Synergy. In addition to adding customizable menu bar controls, you get a menu, hot key control (VERY useful), and a transparent current song title/artwork floater, all of which are accessible in all programs. It's the best.

Butler (http://www.petermaurer.de/nasi.php?thema=butler&sprache=english&kopf=labor) can do this, though it's more hotkey oriented than menubar oriented. Then again, I've already got too much stuff in my menubar, so I prefer hotkeys.
Butler, of course, does much much more, and so might be overkill if all you want is an iTunes controller.

If you're looking for hotkeys, I find SizzlingKeys to be the best game in town.

after having itunes control crash many times, and not wanting to pay for Synergy (its a button that I have on my keyboard, why would I pay money just to have it in menubar?)
I found Tune•Instructor http://www.tune-instructor.com/com/features.html
doesn't have growl support, but does the basics I need. Its working on snow for 9.02 itunes, though it doesn't mention it on the website
