what the hell...I took the plunge and signed up for the $49 first year...been playing with it some...

I gotta say, just the backup program is well worth $49. It is simple, configurable, backs up user folders and restores them and backs up to either idisk OR Cdrw (which I just did).

the virex aint bad, either.

I assume you have a broadband connection?

Something tells me that a simple dial-up wouldn't be so nice to work with....so I'm pretty hesitant to sign up...even though I know it would be useful. I can't afford both broadband and .mac services. :(

I just downloaded and tried it out, I've never used a program like this and maybe retrospect would do the trick. Anyway, I was quite impressed. It's quite nifty.

The way I see it, having .Mac and 10.2 would maximize your experience of both packages, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole etc. blah blah belch!

I had my doubts, but I'm waning. I calculated the size of some of my critical files and it came to ~200 MB, now if I could get that size for the iDisk, at $100 dollars every year, then I would jump in with both feet.

In 60 days I "may" sign up, and hopefully upgrade to 10.2. However, if my little experiment with YDLinux 2.3 goes well this month, I'll stick to YDL/10.1.5 and 9.2.2
All of which will cost me nothing additional at all, with at least two credible alternatives for a linux backup prog.

I'm very conflicted, ease of use is the only factor and I'm turning into a newbie geek in this stuff, which makes ease of use seem a little immature. On the other hand how will this effect my productivity?

I'll know soon enough ;)

My Jerry Springer Final Thought: At least 4 anti M$ comments in Keynote = A Bloody Apple.
They're gonna get a bloody nose if they mess with Mr Gates, Balmer et. al. They take no prisoners (in fact they would probably torture them first).
I mean, anyone who lobbies the house and senate to curb the DOJ's powers in monopolies investigations, whilst they're being prosecuted has brass balls the size of Venus, which is pretty cold right?

Anyone remember Randall and Hopkirk Deceased?

Venus is actually pretty hot. With a sulfuric acid atmosphere. But I think you're right. I think the MacBU ruckus is the just the rumbling beginings of the MS response to the "Switch" adds...which have been pretty blatently abusive of Windows...(Correct, perhaps, but harsh).

Thank you Lerk and Bassi. I've been contemplating the $49, as I currently have no backup plan, and that seems like a nice feature. I didn't want to sign up, just to find out the backup app is severely lacking. I think I may spend the $49 after all. I'll have to reconsider when the price goes to $100, but by then they may have added more juicy features.

Sbur,

And I thought Venus had was further away from the Sun than Earth, ergo cooler. Now I see it's the second planet from the Sun.
Dumb and dumber. I think I buck the Nielsen trend in the intelligence rating of a Mac user.

Just goes to show that thinking of M$ or even switching to Linux has warped my fragile little mind.

I need Mac reorientation.

:p

Well, I went ahead and paid for an account. I think the Virex download and Backup utility alone are worth the price. I've already scheduled Backup to automatically back a few key folders each week, which will be helpful. We'll see how it goes and if I keep the account next year.

BTW, it was very easy to purchase the account and get started with Virex and Backup. I give them an A+ on ease-of-use. And the iDisk is quite responsive considering it's so remote.

No biggy.
