College Football - The World Has Turned Upside Down

I know it's probably a little late to discuss this, but I noticed Rob is from Portland. Since I spent equal time living in both Nebraska and various places in Oregon before moving permanently to NY 16 years ago it struck me that things are not right in college football.

I went to college at the University of Oregon. heck, I was even in the marching band. This team throughout most of its history has, well, sucked. Our finest moment when I was at school there was when we almost tied Notre Dame. Nebraska came to town at one point and kicked us so badly, we should have resigned from Division I right then and there.

Now it seems Oregon could have easily handled Nebraska and should have in fact played Miami for the national championship. I know I haven't been paying attention the last few years, but what the...?? I keep looking around for the pigs flying and Satan poping up complaining about the cold weather.

What makes it even more of an interesting season in our household (and being in Portland in general) is that both my wife and I are from Colorado, and she attended CU (I snuck up north to Colorado State, another school with a long history of not so good football teams!). So let's just say she was not looking forward to heading to her office the morning after CU's drubbing at the hands of Joey Harrington and the rest of the Oregon team! ;-)

It was kind of satisfying to see my old alma mater, LSU, screw things up so badly by beating Tennessee for the SEC championship. Thus did Nebraska back into the championship bowl game.

I think Oregon should have played Miami. OTOH, I also think LSU could have beaten Miami as well. Their 3 losses were too many to be considered for the championship game, but they won their last 6 games convincingly against very good teams, including a rout of a 10 - 1 Illinois team in the Sugar Bowl.

Oregon. Any of you remember Terry Baker? Or am I dating myself? :)

It was just Miami's year, I guess. Hopefully some year my Syracuse Orangemen will get their act together, though they had a pretty decent season after a woeful start:(

Phil, I feel I should remember Terry Baker--but I don't. I was at school there in the early-mid 80s (on the 5-year plan for my BFA). Was that when he played?

Andy, Baker won the Heisman trophy (I believe) sometime in the early 60's. He was a lefty, if I recall correctly.

Phil, I did a Google search on Terry Baker and he won the Heisman Trophy in 1962 (the year I was born) playing Quarterback for Oregon State rather than the University of Oregon.

I think OSU had a couple of good years sometime around the middle of last century.
